I'm not sure the size of the air compressor, but you don't need much. All you need is an A/C that puts out a continuos 50 PSI for painting. If you need a setup for grinding and other air tools you should get a bigger one. We just used a regular air hose and used the regulator on the A/C.

The spray gun is a Devilbiss h.v.l.p. ( high volume low pressure) spray gun. H.v.l.p guns only need 20 PSI air. You can find other guns for cheaper that will do basicly the same thing. You can also get a "gravity feed" gun which has the cup above the gun instead of below. I think the gravity feed guns work better for spraying clearcoat, but other guns will work. If you have never painted a car before, I recommmend buying a book about it before. Its cheaper to buy a book than to buy twice the paint after you have to redo the first job because you made mistakes (everybody does the first time).

As far as the paint curing- It is washable and driveable after about 24 hours if the temp is 70 degrees or higher. The hotter it is the quicker it dries. In the shops I worked at they had $150k downdraft booths that could heat up to 130+ degrees. That was nice- finish the last coat crank up the heat and come back and drive the car home 40 min. later.

Paint doesn't actually cure fully for 60 days. It has to "breathe" so to speak. That is why you can't wax fresh paint until 60-90 days later. You can use polishing compounds because they smoothe surfaces without sealing them like wax does.

Can't wait to get my car home this weekend. Maybe it will be nice enough to get some better pics of it.

Yeah I have a conventional gun that I have used a few times but I just bought a Harbor Freight HVLP that was recommended by a lot of people   However my compressor isn't powerfull enough to supply the volume.  I can't hold 40psi on the regulator of the gun for 2 minutes straight (wide open controls on the gun).  I mean it will spray the motorbike tank fine but not a car.   So I am looking into a larger compressor or a stronger pump for my compressor.

I also have a lot of condensation problems with my compressor which still might be due to the cheap pump (generates too much heat while trying to fill that puppy).   I have a filter system 20 feet from the compressor and another small one at the gun/tool.  Still have water problems.

I guess I will work on getting the compressor up to par and then see if the condensation is still an issue.  I might end up with a hardpipe system in my garage.

you better be sorry for us dial uppers I made a bowl of ice-cream and ate it before it loaded haha.

at first i was like "50PSI!" lol then i continued to read. I prefer the Gravity feed HVLP gun personally.

Kev check in with sears about compressors they run deals all the time, you can even ask him the next time they are having a huge sale on them, they are a few months in advance. I know I used to work there  ;) Condensation is your worst enemy when painting a car, so is early morning dew if your a late worker.

grab some torpedo heaters if you havent already have them, they can minimize drying time as well....just keep them a good distance away from the car.

have you ever painted a car before kev? if not we can all give you some good advice, but a book would be a good help too. Re-painting your own work gets...well very angry *turns green and large* haha.

oh yea, you want nothing coming in, Huge blue tarps to block dust from walls and ceilings can help.

just masked it all up and removed what I could easily. The spoilers were painted as well. Took off the mirrors, grille, foglight and headlight trim, taillights and license plate frame.

Yes, not happy with the color, and also unhappy w/ the finish on its current job. I could spend hours wetsanding and buffing the current paint, and still be unhappy w/ the color.

I will do the blue candy over a highly metallic silver base. At the same time I can achieve a better finish and be happier.

one of the benefits of being an American is having the right to voice your own opinion in a public forum.

its nice to see one of these cars repaired and cleaned up instead of parted out or wrecked.

I'm not sure what your inspiration or psuedo-automotive role models consist of. In my opinion there are several visual aspects of this car which keep it from being a symbiotic blend of restoration with modification that is best showcased usually in concept cars and other good execution of style, design and performance.

The color you chose to accent all the trim just calls attention to itself and for what? When was the last time you saw colored wire loom used in a high quality show car or magazine car? The hood scoops, since their not original to the car, and their curvature matches nothing else on the car and they aren't even molded in...they seem to stand-out in a out-of-place way.

At first, when I was following your work it looked great. Nice, clean and tastefull. Somehwhere along the line bad taste seeped in and it just seems like you went overboard and you're calling attention to things that look out of place, or that just shouldn't be highlighted.

Take a look at a Chevy SSR, Chrylser 300 or Crossfire, some Ferraris, or just page through your favorite car mag. Most people don't go haywire with some blatant off the wall coloration or if they do its usually done to accentuate something of symetry, uniqueness, etc...

Agree with me, don't agree with me, like me or hate me... this is my opinion and thankfully, in America, you're welcome to yours.

well I find that I have to two cents worth on this subject.  I think burton has put alot of time and effort into his ride and for that I give him two thumbs up.  everyone has there right to speek there mind, but sometimes it better to keep ones opinion to ones self.  what ever burtons role model was is of no importance, arlen ness doesn't have to have role models in order to desigh or build a bike.  perhapse burton should have moved the string to the ineterior and body mods section, but still he did the work instead of taking it to the local bolt on retailer to buy buy every eyecandy piece avaiable out of the ads fron the sport inport tuner catalogs.  we live in the worlds greatest country.  it was not built on opinions or the freedom of speech but instead it was built on commitment to ideals, imagination and hard work. (blood, sweat and tears.)

My two cents worth.

Chris
