Ok, this is not a continuation of the last argumentative thread on Heron Vs Kelly's exhaust. This is just to let some of you guys without the exhaust(Kelly's) know a couple things. I posted in the other thread that it was hard to fit up and it hung low. I should probably also add that my car has very worn struts and different then stock donut hangers. The exhaust's craftsmanship is excelent overall and the downpipe is very easy to bolt up. If anyone is unsure about an exhaust system from Kelly I can assure you it's a very good buy for the money. I didnt have to do any mods to get it to fit I just had to play with it a little but its all set now. Later guys

Yeah, I didn't take what you said as a negative toward Kelly's system. I'm sure it is top notch.

Kelly tries hard to produce a quality product.

The point with exhaust hanging low has nothing to do with struts, or whatever. Exhaust has a proper place to hang. That is the position of the pipe relative to the body of the car. So, when we say it hangs low, it needs to be understood that the relationship between the car body & pipe is greater than normal. The strut thing is irrelevent to that. Worn struts may make for a bigger distance between the half shaft & pipe, but that should not be a problem since it is directly in line with the wheels that lift the car over bumps, so it should still clear fine unless you go rock bashing.

Year to year, the hangers aren't exactly the same, and during the life of the car, some other exhaust person may have tweaked the hangers here & there for fit. That means it is highly possible they need tweaked back for any given shipped exhaust system.

Also, even a lowered car can install the same system. You just need to custom cut the pipe to your custom height car. That goes with the territory, and is understood by all I thought?

Kelly and everyone,

 

I was dissapionted to read the pissing match between Chip and Kelly.

I was hoping the discussions on the 3" exhaust system would evolve to include information on the best muffler/tip combination, best value etc.

Information on what length and type of flex section, which cat to buy?????

 

I made contact with a supplier in Queens NY who says he can get anything.

He quoted a price on a aluminzed flex section for around $40.  He mentioned that he

can get 3 ply flex sections (which he claims are much better) where there is a braid on the inside and out.

 

DO WE REALLY NEED Stainless for the Flex section???

I can see if your getting the stainless system but would not an aluminzed flex section

make sense for the aluminized systems? The price difference makes sense!

 

This supplier also memtioned that he can get mufflers, and CATs.  I was going to buy a "high flow" car sound cat until Kelly advised against it as he compared it with another unknow and found it to be better that the CATCO someone posted information about.  He mentiond that it was much larger and therefore would flow better, makes sense to me, larger area more volume!

 

Kelly,  did you get the specifics on that unidentified converter????

 

Mufflers?  I have yet to install my system but by the looks of the photos it seems to me that the best type of muffler would be like the FLo Pro in the photos.  It has and offset inlet and a center outlet.  It would be nice to know the body dimenions and lenth etc.  I would like to go with the magnaflow myself.

 

So can we please evolve the dicussion in a direction to help me and others complete their systems.

travs87tsi: Our parts vendors can't walk on eggshells to cater to the sensitivity of the customer. They really aren't making much money on these parts. If they tried to sell the parts for what they are worth, then they wouldn't sell anything.

Kelly's "Whatever" remark was just a quick note to let you know he got your PM, & apology. To the point saves time for us all. We can't try to read into it to make it say more than it does.

Shelby is probably the most straight up guy on here, and believe me, he isn't making much on those pipes. You should have trusted that the $100 would give you at least that much gain, and let him ship you the product. Those pipes bring a lot of gain. That was the second biggest gain per dollar most of us spend. I built my own, which don't look quite as good as Shelby's.

We all need to learn not to whine and complain so much. Posts as such are a personal attack on the person, and are what starts arguments over a zero dollar investment in one case, and a puny $100 investment in another. If someone pulls your chain forever, that's another story, but even then, there are better ways to go about it other than whining.

Most guys selling stuff are not professional Customer Service reps. They are the get your hands dirty types that can do a service for a price. If they weren't a little rough around the edges as far as CS is concerned, I would be leary about buying from them.

Again, lets try to accept other's degree of maturity as needing improvement, just like ours do.

Shouldn't it be your job, as the buyer, to fully understand what you're buying? I remember his posts on those hardpipes and I distinctly remember him pointing out that it was only the one section, around the air can, not all of them. The seller more then likely believes you know exactly what you are paying for, so I can see him being a little pissed about you backing out after money has bent sent and the product may already be under production. When you say you did further investigation, dont you think that should have been done BEFORE you sent the money off? Thats like buying a car without seeing pictures or anything...not a good idea. As for Kelly's reply, it could have just been "whatever" as in no big problem or whatever its fine or whatever its ok. I know for a fact Shelby is a very helping and knowledgable person when it comes to these cars. He's helped me more then once and I'm sure he would help again if I asked. And when sellers do come along on these boards, value them, because with a car thats only getting older and more scarce, dont expect any big companies to step up and make parts. We dont have Honda's or Accords, and our cars arn't sold by the hundreds of thousands every year. Our aftermarket is made of starquest owners and enthusiests who want to help the community, and maybe make a couple bucks on the side. Do you blame them? Comparing the select few suppliers of aftermarket parts for our cars to Walmart is a joke so I hope nobody takes that point with relevency. As for the muffler to chose with Kelly's exhaust, I went with a Dynomax UltraFlow for 60 bucks and it sounds great. I got the oval one and its a perfect fit back there, lines right up with the stock hole. It isn't too loud at idle and it isnt too loud when you hammer on it, but it lets itself be heard. No one could ever convince me that shelby is ripping some one off.

 

Have you priced what a DSM IC hard pipe (ONE pipe to the tb) costs? ~100-130 for ONE pipe!

 

Shelby does this BY HAND! You want it CHEAPER, make it yourself! anything less and its not worth selling one!

 

I would imagine, by hand from personal experiance, to finish it like shelby does to take ~ 4-6 hours including test fits and oiverall finish. the price of materials is ~50-75 including tools (like sand paper/files/welding wire/gas etc). If you sold them for $100, you would make $10 an hour on average. You can make that at most burger joints!

 

Lets wager this in... Spend time with family... or make Hard pipes for people at $10/hr. Hmmmm?

This thread is NOT a bash Shelby thread.  If it continues to become something OTHER than the original post topic I will delete them.

 

I'm sick and tired of people going at each other lately.

 

This thread in no way shape or form should have anything to do with Shelby, or the IC pipes he offers! Nor is this a place to sling dirt on someone.

joels right , I have priced hard pipes for my galant vr4 man theyre getting over 350 bux for them. and that's what going fast is all about $$$ I have no idea where these cars fell into the hands of chiseling kids trying to save money . The ford escort is kinda more that kind of vehicle, I mean you own an aging turbo car your gonna take it in the tail modding it and maintaining it. Once youve accepted this you can throw more money on the fire and smile smile smile :) :) :) , Shelby woked his butt off to make these for us not because he really wanted to but more because WE asked him to. everybody who has bought the pipes has said good things, . Just an FYI for the people that bought Kelly's exhaust. I have some pics of the Flex pipe and muffler I used. I had the local Monroe weld it on for me.
