Holset Billet Wheel Install ... and fail ...

I picked up an HX35 with a billet wheel in it off a member a while back and finally got around to installing it.

Ohhh ... pretty :)

At first glance they appeared to be the same size and both comp housing are labeled the same, HX35W. So I thought I could swap out the CHRA with my current comp housing. No go. Apparently the inducer is a larger diameter than the stock HX35 so it wouldn't fit in the old comp housing. It did fit fine in the housing that came with the turbo. I wish I would have taken inducer/exducer measurements before install since the new wheel is substantially larger. I will do that very soon.

So got it all together and hit the autocross. Hard to tell if it spools faster when this thing is hard to handle anyways with 2nd gear WOT pulls from every corner breaking traction. The race went GREAT and I took home a third place in SM class. WOOT!

So on the way home I started to hear a slight screeching noise that changed pitch with the throttle (boost levels). I pulled over immediately to find that apparently I never torqued down the bolts that hold the CHRA to the turbine housing... and 2 of the bolts were MIA with the other 2 half way out.

Tightened things up and drove the rest of the 45 min home without issue.

Pulled the turbo apart the next day to find this .... not as bad as I had expected and no apparent damage to the hotside housing, thank all holy things!

Yep, that's no good ...

So I thought no big deal I have a spare on the bench. Went to pull that one apart and slipped ... dropping the CHRA on my concrete floor .... $#%!! Killed that turbine wheel too.

So long story short I got in tough with the guys at Turbo Lab of America and they hooked me up with the bolts I need and a new turbine/shaft. Those guys are AWESOME to deal with!!! Highly recommended!

So now I wait for the new shaft to show and try again. Hopefully I'll be ready for the next autocross this sunday!

Moral of the story ... DOUBLE CHECK ALL YOUR BOLT TORQUES!!

Foiled by operator oversight .... again

Man luck was not on your side lol. The original bolts on mine didnt hold very well with the engine vibrations, lost 3 out of the 6. the new ones i got with the rebuild kit are still holding for the past 2 years. Bolts act really weird with heat. They either seize and you cant remove them or they come loose lol. Latest problem i had with my holset was the stupid spring clamp flying off at 21psi! Not a pleasant sound! Destroyed my wheel but managed to save the compressor housing. Motor was unharmed suprisingly.(its apart at the moment) Make sure that spring clip is well in place! I still dont understand how it popped off.

Yeah I know skullz it's been on the shelf for a couple years now!

I always make sure those big clips are solid ... then again I though I made sure the bolts were tight. I think I snugged them to clock the turbo and then never tightened them down. I'll definitely be checking them periodically now!

It ran fine and even boosted fine with that messed up turbine. I'm sure the balance isn't great anymore though. Sucks to mess up a fresh turbo like that.

IW I am definitely the sole cause of 98% of my issues lol

  • 2 weeks later...

i just got my Wicked Wheel 2 in. got it on the turbo but havent installed it on the car yet. Turns out my hx35 is off an orions bus with a 5.9 cummins motor that runs on natural gas... LOL so they didnt actually make a wicked wheel for mine. so i got with diesel site who makes the wicked wheels and send them my stock wheel and they designed and built me a wheel.. looks dope! cant wait to see how much it helps..

this is what my wheel measured up at though roughly.. 48.44mm inducer and 76.81mm exducer
