starzky
Are all alternators the same for 1985 to 1989 ?Any difference? Thanks!
Malykaii
The plugs on the back may be different. But there's an adaptor harness on ebay for $10. Look for Hitachi New to old style plug.
vbrad511
88-89 had a wider groove in the pulley.

TexasQuest
87-89 had 75 amps to handle more electrical load. Still wasn't enough.......
slowbra01
I'd rather use this thread rather than start another alternator thread....So i finally got the chance to take off the alternator and wanted to put in the one i bought off ebay last year.... yes the car has been sitting that long...... Came across problems1. the plugs aren't the same.2. The bottom "ear" where the bolt goes through is two piece rather than one3. the top ear where the bolt goes through to place tension on the belt is threaded unlike the one on the car which is smooth.... Can someone send me a link to an alternator that is correct?!http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f187/jmisenas/10965085_10152686528071239_1844056296_o.jpg
TexasQuest
Looks like the old alternator is an 86-back. The new one is an 87-89. That would explain the different plugs.
slowbra01
ok, but what about the body of the alternator. Was there a difference between the years as well? i'll take a picture tomorrow so you can see what i mean. So where can i get an alternator? TexasQuest
The 100 amp alternator's body is bigger than the 75 amp but the mounting tabs are in the same spot. I don't know of a bolt on pre-87 alternator upgrade. You'll probably have to get yours rebuilt & upgraded at an alternator rebuilder.
