BoostedBimmer
Ok, I know the trick is to securely tape the new cable to the end of the old cable and just pull it through to install. I was wondering which way should I pull the cable through (i.e. pull towards the engine or pull it towards the dash)? Will it get snagged on anything and/or do I have to remove anything (i.e. fender liner, etc.)?
alp247
I just did mine so it's still fresh in my mind. just make sure you tape it real good cause it does take a little force to pull it though somtimes. I pulled mine from the engine bay into the dash. You can see under the dash when you pull it in so you can move the other wires to wiggle it through. it's really simple so this should not be an issue. ColdScrip
Add some grease to it. It really helps.

TexasQuest
Remove the lower dash panel so you can see what your doing better.
ucw458
It goes through a grommet at the firewall. Lube will make it pass through it easily.

Shelby
with the knee pad out of the way and the release latch,, you can run a straight rod from front straight to the latch , last time i used a 1/4 brake line , just in case the outter houseing is bad also , but i have had better luck pulling them in from inside car towards the rad
stesir
My string came off. Where inside the car does it go out? Right at the top corner where that thick black wire is>? I am having trouble. Thanks
Shelby
ii have used a steel 3/16th brake line and another time a long 1/4" threaded rod , the rod will push straight thru to the knee pad upper area , affix the new cable to your rod and carefuly pull it into the engine compartment before installing the new cable lube it with a good thick oil as far thru the inner side of the cable as possible this can be done by using tape to enlarge the cable diameter use a suitable hose 3/8" id and clamp fill the hose with oil and slowly blow the oil into the cable with mouth or air pressure repeat this until oil is see comeing out the other end of cable this will extend cable life by a lot doing this same thing to the rear parking brake cables will make them last almost for ever , just use a suitable size hose to put in oil
stesir
Thanks but its all way over my head, I'm having a friend who has a small engine repair business assist.I'll keep it updated of any progress. And how in my head to I feel I have a junker because of a freekin' hood cable...???Thanks
TexasQuest
I understand man. It's a royal pain in the arse. Best way is to tape the crap out of it to the new cable before you pull it out. Then the new cable pulls itself through.
stesir
just some background, I switched my '88 Starion Dash to an '86. The hood prop handle is different on the '86. My string during the transfer came undown. The '88 cable is still attached at the front hood latch assembly. I am trying to get the '86 cable to work and it has to go from the interior of the car out to the front latch..the '86 has a big plastic thing that attached to the handle. I actually like the '86 handle...but it wasn't a choice-I had to do the switch, the '88 pull handle would not be secure pulling it..
