For sure we should get together my friend.......and, as far as the exhaust goes....that exhaust has already been installed on my father's white conquest, but unfortunately the car was sold last week. My black Conquest is 100% original.

UP DATE!

Well, this is what I have been doing to my Conquest lately. I had been having a little noise coming from the engine at around 3500rpm. Early last year I took my car to a mechanic here in my area that came highly recommended as being very knowledgeable in these machines. Make the story short; this guy was everything but a knowledgeable professional. I spent a lot of money and he just misdiagnosed the problem...the car spent 4 months in the shop and when I picked it up....the problem was still there. The guy took my money and he did not want to be responsible to either fix it right or refund me my money.

Luckly, I met a fellow member that was willing to diagnose and fix the car for me.....and he nailed it!

The problem was a spon bearing on cylinder #3 all along....so we decided to perform a 100% stock rebuilt. Block did not have to be turned at all. We just had to replace piston rings (stock diameter), bearings, balancing shaft bearings, new oil pump, etc. DAD fixed my stock piston rod to spec. Following pictures will show the difference between the spun bearing and the bearings from the other cylinders....you'd be the judge.

The car is being delivered this Friday....I can't wait!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you have the balance shafts installed but no chain on the gears. It's been awhile since I built my engine, but that doesn't seem right. Either you connect the balance shaft chain or you eliminate the balance shafts.

It appears that neither the lower or upper balance shafts are connected to the crank so they wouldn't spin. I'm not sure why you'd keep them in place if you weren't going to use them. Also, These pics look like final assembly as the crank is timed and the head is on. This is interesting.....

Lower is connected to the oil pump. It will spin if he puts the drive chain on it.

Thats a very dirty build if it is in fact a build. Hope not. Still has old gasket all over it and the crank timing gear looks installed backwards but could be the pic.

If you didnt strip that engine completely bare and wash it, the oil cooler and lines, oil filter housing. That engine will be back out before you get down the street. Judging by what looks to be a fresh hone and cleaned pistons in the block.....this will end poorly.

Of course the block was deep cleaned by the machine shop. Everything was done with high standards and no cutting corners. The pictures are only while the engine was being built, it is not how the engine was finally assembled before it was put back in the engine bay. I did not get rid of the balance shafts (even though it was recommended by many) I didnt like the fact the the car would end up having a small vibration at aroung 3k RPM's due to balance shaft elimination. Besides this is a 100% stock original car and I want to keep it that way with no mods what so ever.

Good eyes guys,

I have been doing the work on Diego's starquest over the last month. The timing gear was installed backwards in this image, and was changed after I timed everything and added the balance shaft chain. Of course I didnt just throw the balance shafts in! Plus you cant install the timing gear backwards, it wont fit right on the chain tensioner.

Like every other 100k mile starquest, the engine had a spun rod bearing on stock bearings. The crank was turned 0.010 under on the rods, polished on the mains. We had the #3 rod machined by Dad. I had the crankshaft checked for straightness and machined to the exact spec specified in my 1988 fsm.

New balance shaft bearings were installed. (after much recomendation to remove them) The rod and main bearings were measured to have 0.0015" oil clearance.

As for the head not being decked, there was no reason the head was verified flat with a truebar.

The engine was hot tanked by a local machine shop. I flushed out the oil cooler using brake clean and an air compressor fittng to verify everything was clean. We also had the shop cut the glaze to accept the new rings.

The engine has ~40 psi oil pressue on warm idle w/ 10-30 wt oil. Topps off at around 83psi a little over 2200 rpms.

I would love to answer any questions about the build. This is a really great car and I was happy to work on it. A great example of a period correct 1989 with all the right modifications. ( trillogy turbos injectors, marnal head, rebuilt engine w/ a solid crankshaft.

Love this car. My first Quest was a Black 88. I was 16 and had so much fun in that thing. But the very first time I ever drove in the ice and snow, I slid on some black ice into a ditch and proceeded to flip the car. It was a bad day. Seeing your car brings back a lot of memeories for me....

Well...unfortunately for me my beautiful 89' black SHP Starquest has found a new home. I'm still in shock about the fact that I actually let it go. I know it deep in my gut I will never find another one like it. Fortunately, this great example has found a true new owner enthusiast that I am certain will take care off it. I hope he enjoys it as much as I did all these years.

I'll miss her for sure!

Hahaha! I didn't have to. I really wasn't sure about if I really wanted to let it go. I was playing with the idea for a couple of weeks (more out of pressure from my boss....sorry... My wife!)

There are a few changes going on in my life right at the moment. I'm about to become a father for the first time, and my wife and I are planning to move to a different state by the end of the year. So, the more complicated my life became in these past months, the less time I had to really drive and enjoy my toy. It was becoming a garage ornament!

Everything happened very quickly and precisely. I thought of posting it for sale here on the forum, but I realized that the few cars that lately had come up for sale on SQC..or by linking them here from ebay (the few the actually were in good to excellent condition to be worthy of collecting) were getting negative reviews or the owners were getting critized due to their asking price. That's one thing I never agreed with some of the members on this forum. I never understood why our own community always inclined to underestimate the value of these amazing machines. That's something that is beyond my comprehension! This is why I was hesitant to post it here. I didn't want to deal with criticism nor was I going to deal with people making me feel like I had to explain or defend the reasons why I thought my car was worth what I decided to ask for it.

Fortunately for me, the buyer and ultimately the car this aggrevation did not happen.... There were a couple gentlemen that took the iniciative to contact me by PM's to inquire about the car. Soon enough, one of these nice gentlemen came to an agreement with me, and the business transaction was completed. This individual is a true car enthusiast that has some amazing cars decorating his garage. That's why the sadness of letting go of my car gets a bit attenuated by the fact that, it will indeed be taken good care of. At the end, me as the owner-seller knew the value of this fine example, and I was pacient and lucky enough to met with a buyer that understood and appreciated its value as well and that realized that it's very hard to come by one of these cars in original configuration and great honest shape.

Sorry to hear that you made the decision to sell it. Things in life happen though. I get it. One question ... I need new tires on my SHP rims in the next year. What tires were you running? I love the aggressive look and they way wrap the rims. I can't quite make out what they were in the pics.
