RB25DET Swapped Conquest - With Video

Hey everyone. I have been working on swapping a Series 1 RB25DET out of an R33 Skyline into my 1987 Chrysler Conquest and finally got her running! I got a good deal on Ebay on a front clip and had most everything that I needed. I fabbed and welded all of the engine and transmission mounts myself and just completed the wiring. I have one video of the second start and drive on Youtube and I thought you all might want to check it out. I will post up some more videos as I have time. Everything was still pretty rigged up in the engine bay when the first video was taken. Since then, I have gotten the factory Conquest gauges wired up and working (minus speedo) and have cleaned up most all of the wiring in the engine bay with loom, etc. I also added an "Ebay special" front mount intercooler as I could not get the factory R33 sidemount to fit anywhere. I am currently finishing the exhaust (straight piped 3" turbo back) and putting the interior back together and finishing up the miscellaneous stuff that keeps coming up. I have the P/S working and I am trying to make the A/C work as well. It is mainly being built for drifting in a few local events and also as a fun couple days a week driver. Thanks for the nice support everybody. I am getting all of my pictures together right now and will get them up as soon as possible. I built the flange for the downpipe this weekend and will hopefully have the exhaust finished up by the end of this weekend. I was planning on having more progress, but ended up swapping an engine in my brother's new Galant VR-4.

Here is a picture of my MAF to turbo intake pipe. I used a small piece off of the stock Skyline piping and made an adapter to go from 2.5" to 3". The rest is built out of 3" mandrel bent exhaust pipe

You got more pics of that panel under the intercooler.

 

The piece under the intercooler was my attempt to make a functional mount and air "scoop" to get more flow over the radiator. It ended up hanging down below the bumper and looking terrible. I had to trim it way off to make it work a little better. I will post up some pictures next time I'm at the shop.

Here are a couple of pictures of the underside.

 

I had to trim the engine to transmission bracing on the RB25 (both sides) to clear the steering linkage on the Conquest. The stock Conquest engine cross member fit perfectly in the recess in the RB oil pan

Here is the transmission mounting. I built new mounts off of the Conquest subframe and used the stock RB transmission mount. The fill plug and drain plug are all accessible for service. Also, you can see the custom driveline. It is just the RB and the Quest driveline spliced together. I had a shop in town do the work and balance it.

Here is some of the nightmare wiring mess for the ECU before everything got tied up inside. I cut a new hole in the footwell near the center console to run the main harness through for the RB engine wiring. I was able to use the factory RB grommet for a good seal. You can see the Dakota Digital tach adapter hiding in the wires. I'm glad that in almost finished wiring :)

Here is the start of the exhaust. The turbo outlet on the RB ended up lining up perfectly and almost comes out where the factory Conquest exhaust did. I am planning on running 3" from the turbo back to the factory location in the rear bumper.

How is that possible ?

starion exhaust turbine outlet and rb25 exhaust turbine outlet, on opposite sides of motor.

The exhaust being on the oppsing side of the engine is really the only reason why I haven't attempted this swap. My original excuse was that "you can't readily get parts for RBs" and while that may be true, we almost can't readily get parts for our cars anymore, hah.

 

Great work so far man, looks like it's coming along great. You never realize how redundant and nonsensical Nissan's wiring harnesses are until you tear one apart, I say. :lol:

RB25s r rugged smooth motors. Gotta do somethin really dumb to break one. Rarely need any parts

Very stout, slick shifting gearbox too (faarrrr better than toyotas R154 5spd)

Neighbours own pulled hella strong, throughout whole rpm range;

gt35(on ebay top mount mani) + injector + moded AFM + SAFC, stock ecu

 

wiring was too simple - twisted 3 or 4 wires together, had it running in minutes, literally

Never tore harness apart, as seen in photos here

Exhaust Update - Good news: I got the exhaust built this weekend and it sounds mean!! Bad news: It came out way too low and hits on everything!! I think I will keep it how it is and take it for some test drives to get the bugs worked out and then tweak/rebuild it. I almost had an electrical fire this weekend as well! I forgot to hook up a couple of the ground wires in the engine bay after I finished looming some wires and a couple of the fusible links starting smoking and almost burned out some wiring beneath the fuse box. Luckily, I got it shut down and found the source of the problem before anything bad happened. Anyway, here are some updated pictures.

Thank you. I'm pretty happy with it so far. I didn't really do much research on the swap or the fitment before starting. I just got the front clip and started piecing it together. I have been amazed by how well everything fit in there. The shifter even came out in the right spot. The wiring was hard for me to get my head around because it just looks so bad when you start. There are wires everywhere!!! Once you start tracing things out, there are only a handful that you need to hook up :) I agree with you though on the redundant part, they seem to just loop around endlessly and go to the same spot.
