haha im taking the sway bar and the contorl arm off and painting them black and if i can ill pull that bar off and paint it black too

Got a whole box of parts from DAD today. the shipping was ridiculously fast! Great service. Called about my cam, it should be ground tomorrow and shipped back to me with springs. Taking my pistons, rings, etc to the machine shop tomorrow so he can make everything fit together and should get the block back next week. Which will be perfect since thats when I'll be done with summer finals .

So updates will be slow until after tuesday of next week but after that ITS ON!

Alright guys. The rush is on... I have about two and a half weeks until school starts and I'm going to try my darndest to have this thing running (and painted) by then.

 

Todays update is kind of crappy but I spent most of the day untapping the car, then washing and painting piles of "engine bay stuff"

I also came up with a list of how to put all the peices back together without (hopefully) having to take something back off because something else goes under it.

 

Its working good so far...

 

Side note: Going to pick up the engine from the machine shop tomorrow and my Cam should be back from schnieder any day now..

Woke up and painted the power steering gear box:

Then while it dried I went to the machine shop and picked up my parts...

Then came back and rebuilt the steering knuckle thing...

Then decided to do the abs delete, which meant taking off the majority of the hard lines I put on yesterday (lol)

Today I figured out the wiring and put a few more things on...

 

Its moving slower than Id like because I have to clean 20 years of corrsion off everything... Took me like 40 minutes to clean the silver box

Engine bay should be good to go tomorrow after I get a few things painted and installed.

Then I just have to finish the ABS delete (with the new brake line) and start assembling the motor.

I noticed you painted the A/C drier. If it the old one, you might as well just replace it. If it rattles, its all rusted inside and will not work. I got a new one from autozone for less than $25. keep up the good work :thumbs up:

The car was converted to R134 by the previous owner and the a/c system appears to be in good shape. I thought I'd probably end up replacing the dryer anyways but since I was painting stuff I figured why not? Thanks for the input guys it is very helpful.

why not take the front crossmember and sway bar off now while you have the opportunity? i would highly recommend mk1's poly bushing set since youve got it this far apart. it makes the car feel like it just rolled off the lot.

No, you don't; unless cashflow is (as I would imagine) an issue, it'll be a lot easier to do bushings while it already lifted and taken apart. things like control arm and subframe bushings can get tricky with a full car, even though they're far from impossible to install.

 

I'd still reccomend, though it'll be a bit pricey, going to whiteline or energy suspension or somewhere and ordering every poly part they make. They usually add negligable NVH, and add precision you'll feel every second you're driving the car, vs. coilovers etc that only make a difference when flirting with the car's limits... just my opinion.

if it were me, i would relocate all your relays and stuff to the inside of the fender while you have it open lie that! it will clean up the bay immensely

I have thought about doing that with the wiring but ive decided to save it for another day. The first reason for that is because I havent even driven the car yet. Im not 100 percent positive that everything works and want to keep everything easily accesible to work on. And the second reason is that I intend to convert to MPI in the not to distant future and will be able to do it then

Today i started the rebuild using Dad's "Let's do a basic engine rebuild" thread as a guide.

Checked the piston oilers with a small screwdriver and cleaned them (again)

Also, dad fixed my cruise control for me, It had a broken off vac line nipple, he superglued this one in its place. (much cheaper than getting one from pull a part)

after a short hiatus to drop my younger brother off for his first year at college it was back to work (i still have another week before classes start haha )

 

Got to work on the block checking the ring gap and putting the pistons in the block.

Woke up the next morning and got going on the timing components: (still waiting on the head to get here in the mail so that's why I'm doing the things in the order I am)
