Frenchi934
Got a whole box of parts from DAD today. the shipping was ridiculously fast! Great service. Called about my cam, it should be ground tomorrow and shipped back to me with springs. Taking my pistons, rings, etc to the machine shop tomorrow so he can make everything fit together and should get the block back next week. Which will be perfect since thats when I'll be done with summer finals .So updates will be slow until after tuesday of next week but after that ITS ON! Frenchi934
Alright guys. The rush is on... I have about two and a half weeks until school starts and I'm going to try my darndest to have this thing running (and painted) by then. Todays update is kind of crappy but I spent most of the day untapping the car, then washing and painting piles of "engine bay stuff" I also came up with a list of how to put all the peices back together without (hopefully) having to take something back off because something else goes under it. Its working good so far... Side note: Going to pick up the engine from the machine shop tomorrow and my Cam should be back from schnieder any day now..Here's what I did manage to take pictures of when I had a minute. http://a.imageshack.us/img188/8862/sdc10624a.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img827/8707/sdc10625r.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img842/3921/sdc10626.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img227/7853/sdc10627l.jpg P.S. The coolest part of today IMO was putting the Mitsubishi Trim package plate back on the car for no particular reason
Frenchi934
Quick synopsis of today: Woke up and painted the power steering gear box: http://a.imageshack.us/img811/8945/sdc10629.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img715/7057/sdc10630s.jpg Then while it dried I went to the machine shop and picked up my parts...Then came back and rebuilt the steering knuckle thing... http://a.imageshack.us/img715/1731/sdc10632r.jpg Oops! what's missing....? the rubber cover. So I had to do it all over again. lovely... http://a.imageshack.us/img580/4923/sdc10634w.jpg That's more like it... Then decided to do the abs delete, which meant taking off the majority of the hard lines I put on yesterday (lol) http://a.imageshack.us/img827/1843/sdc10631g.jpg Then put the gearbox, clutch master cylinder and brake booster back in it: http://a.imageshack.us/img715/9471/sdc10635m.jpg Then undercoated the trans tunnel... http://a.imageshack.us/img580/4146/sdc10633.jpg Then back to more cleaning and installing.Heres where I left it for tonight: http://a.imageshack.us/img715/4867/sdc10636h.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img441/3968/sdc10637p.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img827/1029/sdc10638.jpg

Frenchi934
Today I figured out the wiring and put a few more things on... Its moving slower than Id like because I have to clean 20 years of corrsion off everything... Took me like 40 minutes to clean the silver box anyways heres some pictures. http://a.imageshack.us/img85/3856/sdc10640o.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img825/8489/sdc10641.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img708/9794/sdc10642c.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img690/8951/sdc10643ue.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img832/9677/sdc10644.jpg Engine bay should be good to go tomorrow after I get a few things painted and installed. Then I just have to finish the ABS delete (with the new brake line) and start assembling the motor. 89PalermoSHP
this thread warms my heart. its the anti- "i want to make my headlights only go half way up while my engine compression is all over the board" Edited August 7, 2010 by 89PalermoSHP
Frenchi934
Today I painted a bunch of stuff and finished the engine bay. Tomorrow I'll start putting the engine together. nomad
I noticed you painted the A/C drier. If it the old one, you might as well just replace it. If it rattles, its all rusted inside and will not work. I got a new one from autozone for less than $25. keep up the good work :thumbs up:
Frenchi934
The car was converted to R134 by the previous owner and the a/c system appears to be in good shape. I thought I'd probably end up replacing the dryer anyways but since I was painting stuff I figured why not? Thanks for the input guys it is very helpful. 89PalermoSHP
why not take the front crossmember and sway bar off now while you have the opportunity? i would highly recommend mk1's poly bushing set since youve got it this far apart. it makes the car feel like it just rolled off the lot. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MK1-MASTER-POLYURETHANE-SUSPENSION-BUSHING-KIT-STARION-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ160463129127QQptZLHQ5fDefaultDomainQ5f100#ht_1893wt_939

BIGbCraig
I was actually planning on putting coilovers on it sometime in the future and getting larger sway bars and I figured I would get the poly bushings then... you dont have to take the engine out to do that do you? No, you don't; unless cashflow is (as I would imagine) an issue, it'll be a lot easier to do bushings while it already lifted and taken apart. things like control arm and subframe bushings can get tricky with a full car, even though they're far from impossible to install. I'd still reccomend, though it'll be a bit pricey, going to whiteline or energy suspension or somewhere and ordering every poly part they make. They usually add negligable NVH, and add precision you'll feel every second you're driving the car, vs. coilovers etc that only make a difference when flirting with the car's limits... just my opinion. spoolinturbo
if it were me, i would relocate all your relays and stuff to the inside of the fender while you have it open lie that! it will clean up the bay immensely ps looks great! Frenchi934
I have thought about doing that with the wiring but ive decided to save it for another day. The first reason for that is because I havent even driven the car yet. Im not 100 percent positive that everything works and want to keep everything easily accesible to work on. And the second reason is that I intend to convert to MPI in the not to distant future and will be able to do it then heres what I did sunday: Got a couple things from the pull a part: http://a.imageshack.us/img683/2111/sdc10672jj.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img196/5817/sdc10671al.jpg then cleaned the engine block really good....and then did it again haha: http://a.imageshack.us/img18/3431/sdc10669m.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img535/7899/sdc10663w.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img651/3534/sdc10664k.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img6/2789/sdc10667n.jpg then painted the engine block: http://a.imageshack.us/img829/8796/sdc10670.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img823/6808/sdc10673b.jpg
Frenchi934
Today i started the rebuild using Dad's "Let's do a basic engine rebuild" thread as a guide. http://a.imageshack.us/img839/3959/sdc10680.jpg Checked the piston oilers with a small screwdriver and cleaned them (again) http://a.imageshack.us/img843/3076/sdc10681.jpg Plastiguage! http://a.imageshack.us/img185/6506/sdc10682o.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img834/2135/sdc10683.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img714/1339/sdc10686vi.jpg I also used the plastiguage to check the connecting rods but didn't take pictures Also, dad fixed my cruise control for me, It had a broken off vac line nipple, he superglued this one in its place. (much cheaper than getting one from pull a part) http://a.imageshack.us/img819/2071/sdc10687t.jpg

Frenchi934
Woke up the next morning and got going on the timing components: (still waiting on the head to get here in the mail so that's why I'm doing the things in the order I am) http://a.imageshack.us/img828/8061/sdc10732.jpg Dad has helped a lot with the engine assembly. It's really nice to have the help and second opinions on these things. http://a.imageshack.us/img823/668/sdc10733i.jpg Got the timing cover on and a few other things on there (thankfully I cleaned most of this stuff when I took it off): http://a.imageshack.us/img821/7697/sdc10738t.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img828/3497/sdc10739.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img704/4489/sdc10740n.jpg Then torqed it all up and added the pulleys on: (used a belt wrench to hold the one that torques to 90ftlbs. http://a.imageshack.us/img815/773/sdc10763.jpg
