D_Venable
started by priming the oil pan http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270650.jpg then taped off and started painting the insides of the tail, 3rd pic is how it ended, I did too many coats, oh well, good enough http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270651.jpghttp://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270652.jpghttp://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270654.jpg then put some white on the oilpan http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270655.jpg then I got to work on making the hood latch shut, and it works, hehe http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270656.jpghttp://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270661.jpghttp://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270664.jpghttp://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270665.jpghttp://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270666.jpg

D_Venable
the Killer chrome, if done lightly is pretty good, I just did too many coats, I should have stopped where I had it in the top 2 pics of the tails, a little dark, but it was more reflective than where I ended up (which just looks like a high gloss aluminum paint Andrew grabbed my camera as I was pondering stuff, sitting in the engine bay, lol http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270667.jpg And I started to box back in the notch-out for the lower rad pipe to run through (doing hard rad pipes) in the lower rad support area, I stopped and went to help Andrew do some tuning http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3270668.jpg

Convette
Looking good man. Really doesn't provide ish for crash protection tho.. I need to build a bumper support as well. Mine is trash. I'm planning on using aluminum tho to save weight and be "quick release".. Edited March 30, 2010 by idriftjunk
D_Venable
yeah, I know it'll do nothing in a crash, I'm thinking of doing a 1" square tube "hoop" to sit on the tops of the frame rails and go into the bumper skin, but not actually attach it to the bumper (so the skin would remain the 6 bolts on top to remove) and just have some of the 1/4" rod "hooks" come off it instead of the two long fragile ones I've got now. I might take some measurements before I head back to work today (came home to grab lunch and some round tube to bend up to mock up the rad pipes with) to bend up the square tube. InvolvedRotary
Looks like a great project, though I have a single question. With all of hte fabbing you are doing to make things work, have you ever considered using a second gen rx7 oil cooler? Ive bee fooling around with the idea but lack the welding skills to make it happen. And for those wondering, the stock oil cooler on ALL 86-91 rx7's are easily about half the total size of the stock TSi intercooler (too lazy to go out to one of my FC's to measure), and whats better, they also have an internal thermostat to let oil flow in and out. Could probably snag one from a local junkyard (or check www.rx7club.com's for sale threads) for an oil cooler. Would have to make new lines but it takes banjo fittings somewhat like stock. Gl ono the continued progress with the beastly beater.
D_Venable
no I didn't consider it, mainly because this one came stock on this car, and it fits. I'm trying to make as many stock pieces work as I can, to keep the budget down
D_Venable
well, I got bends made for the hard rad hoses at work today, 1.75" and 1.5" OD tubing, I didn't do anything to the car itself though. Manual mandrel benders sure do wear you out, lol so I took a night off from the car and watched a movie Edited March 31, 2010 by D_Venable
Killtodie
May I ask why you decided to start doing work on such a run down, rusted flatty?
D_Venable
May I ask why you decided to start doing work on such a run down, rusted flatty? and I come back with another question. Why Not! seriously though, bought the car for $200, had to rebuild the motor, so I just went for it. I'm saving the car from the crusher, for at least a few years. And it's a good test bed to learn some stuff with (welding and what not). by saving this car, I can better my skills to save or build the next one. Having this car pop up to me also gives me an opportunity to start saving money on gas on my daily commutes to work, my Blazer averages around 14-16 mpg, and I figure at the worst, I'll be able to get 3mpg better, taking into account the 20 cent price premium for 92-93 octane fuel, at 3mpg more, I save 2 cents a mile. That may not seem like much, but with putting about 15k on the blazer last year, that'll add up quick. Plus this will be more fun than my Blazer as a DD Yes, I do wish I could have found a rust-free, or less rusty shell to start with, but sometimes you take what you can get. had I waited 3 months, I could have gotten a rust free 86 TSi roller for $500. But I wanted a flatty, not a widebody, and good flatties are that much harder to find than good widebodies. OH, and I won't feel bad about driving a rust bucket through Minnesota winters
Killtodie
Good explanation, what are you planing to do with all that rust? leave it as is? the paint job, just as is? I do love what you've done with the front end! that's perfect weight elimination. You should consider making a kit for the rest of us
D_Venable
what rust I don't cut out and replace (floorboards, front inner fenders getting tubbed) will be left as is (that's mainly the rockers) frame rails are surprisingly solid. as for paint, the rest of the car will get the same treatment as the passenger side of the car, rattle-canned gunmetal gray, with the white pinstripe OH, and I just got my carbon fiber melon launcher (aka muffler). yes a CF sleeved one, the ricer kid in me has come out a bit, haha Edited March 31, 2010 by D_Venable

D_Venable
Thanks Scott, I'm still hit or miss on some things, but I feel I'm starting to find a "groove" of sorts now added a "crash bar" of sorts and got the top mount points for the intercooler http://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310693.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310695.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310696.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310697.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310698.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310699.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310700.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310702.jpg I've got some trimming of the inner lip of the airdam to do to get it to sit correctly http://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310703.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310704.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310705.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310706.jpg Also got my CF melon launcher, lol and sat it under the car where I plan to mount it http://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310687.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310688.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310689.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310690.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310691.jpghttp://26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P3310692.jpg
D_Venable
haha i love this car and being that he paid 200 bux makes it that much better. ME = JEALOUS The sad part is, that after the motor rebuild, suspension, wheels, and the purchase price of the car, I'm over 3k invested but nearly 2k of that is the motor and machine work for it
