I'm currently trying to get the a/c functioning on my sons '88 that I purchased recently. The compressor will not engage. I have checked the relay and it seems to be working. I managed to run a wire to the battery from the compressor and it will kick on and off. I left it running and charged the system. What should I look for next? What sends power to the relay? The a/c blows nice cold air when it is straight wired but I want it right.

im taking off my head, and ive pretty much got everything disconnected. my only concern is not to mess up the timing. anyone got any tips to help keep the chain in the right place? ive taken off the heads in my v6 cavalier a few times, but never had to mess with the timing. any help would be appreciated, thanks.
