I picked up an 89 a month ago and pulled off the exh mani this past weekend to replace a stud!! That turned into me taking the head off.... I left the cam gear and chain on the car and ziptied the chain to the gear so it did not move. Does the side with the sealant(looks like red rtv) go towards the manifold(down) or towards the water neck(up)?

I am going to powder coat the outside of my oil pan but I also am going to weld in a better baffle on the inside. However, there is a lot of black paint on the inside and I don't know how to get it off.. not even sure why it was painted to begin with but anyways I don't think I should media blast it because Im scared I won't be able to clean it all out.. any tips? I tried aircraft stripper and that won't take any off. If I blast it and then run it through the dishwasher a bunch of times and mayb
