Piggy-back fuel computer round up

Recommended Posts

Here is a quick round up of available piggy back fuel computers.

Product: Apexi S-AFC

Website: http://www.apexi-usa.com

Fuel matrix: 8 x 2

Ignition matrix: None

Replace MAF with MAP?: No

Programmable by owner?: Yes

Est. MSRP in USD: $249

Comments: Allows the fuel curve to be adjusted in 1% increments (+ or - 50% total). Of the 8 RPM programmable points, they must be seperated by 500 RPMs. The fuel curve is segmented into high and low engine loads, giving a programmable 8x2 fuel matrix.

Product: Apexi S-AFC II

Website: http://www.apexi-usa.com

Fuel matrix: 12 x 2

Ignition matrix: None

Replace MAF with MAP?: No

Programmable by owner?: Yes

Est. MSRP in USD: $295

Comments: Allows the fuel curve to be adjusted in 1% increment (+ or - 50% total). Of the 12 RPM programmable points, they must be seperated by 200 RPMs. The fuel curve is segmented into high and low engine loads, giving a programmable 12x2 fuel matrix. Interestingly two fuel maps are offered. One map could be used for race fuel, and the other for normal pump fuel. Can monitor factory engine knock sensor.

Product: Greddy E-Manage

Website: http://www.greddy.com

Fuel matrix: 16 x 16

Ignition matrix: 16 x 16

Replace MAF with MAP?: No

Programmable by owner?: Yes

Est. MSRP in USD: $435 and up

Comments: The E-Manage is very basic without the Support Tool supplement. The Support Tool unlocks advance features. Allows the fuel curve to be adjusted in 1% increments (+ or - 150% total). Of the 16 RPM programmable points, they must be seperated by 1 RPM. The fuel curve is also segmented into 16 different engine loads, giving a programmable 16 x 16 fuel matrix. E-Manage comes with many options that cost extra money to unlock. The ignition timing harness, for instance, allows you modify your spark timing in a 16 x 16 matrix, plus 20 degrees or - 20 degrees in one degree increments. An optional MAP sensor is available, but it still requires the factory MAF sensor to be in place. The MAP sensor allows you to scale the engine load by MAP instead of the TPS for the ignition map. Unfortunately this feature isn't extended to the fuel map. Datalogging is offered.

Product: HKS F-Con S

Website: http://www.hksusa.com

Fuel matrix: 16 x 24

Ignition matrix: Yes, size unknown

Replace MAF with MAP?: No

Programmable by owner?: No, dealer only

Est. MSRP in USD: $1525

Comments: Very little information is published about this product. Mainly because this product isn't intended to be programmed by us, but by the authorized dealer only. The fuel map is a 16x24 matrix. The timing map size is unknown, but the timing is limited to + or - 15 degrees. The MSRP price was listed at $775, but it's now listed at $1525 MSRP. This makes it the most expensive piggyback unit out there.

Product: HKS S-AFR

Website: http://www.hksusa.com

Fuel matrix: 11 x 1

Ignition matrix: None

Replace MAF with MAP?: No

Programmable by owner?: Yes

Est. MSRP in USD: $245

Comments: Allows the fuel curve to be adjusted in 1% increment (+ or - 50% total). Of the 11 RPM programmable points, they must be seperated by 50 RPMs. HKS doesn't seperate the fuel points when it comes to low/high engine load. Instead they overlay another set of fuel points that they refer to as "response". This response is composed of 6 RPM programmable points. Visualizing the overall correction can be confusing.

Product: HKS VPC

Website: http://www.hksusa.com

Fuel matrix: NA

Ignition matrix: None

Replace MAF with MAP?: Yes

Programmable by owner?: Yes

Est. MSRP in USD: $1200

Comments: Removes the factory MAF and replaces it with a MAP sensor. Injector sizes are limited to what PROM chips are available from HKS. Majority of the fuel correction is done in the PROM. The controls that the HKS VPC offers are limited to fine tuning only. Unfortunately, they are not adequate. HKS has now discontinued this product line.

Product: Map ECU

Website: http://www.powerhouseracing.com

Fuel matrix: 22 x 19

Ignition matrix: None

Replace MAF with MAP?: Yes

Programmable by owner?: Yes, PC needed

Est. MSRP in USD: $895

Comments: One of the newest fuel computers. It allows the fuel curve to be adjusted in 1% increment (+ or - 100% total). The 22 RPM points are not programmable, they are predefined from 0, 200, 400, up to 8000 RPMs max. The fuel curve is also segmented into 19 different, predefined engine loads, giving a programmable 22x19 fuel matrix. This unit removes the MAF and replaces it with a MAP sensor. Offers a self learn feature that will automatically populate the fuel map for you. This is an excellent feature not offered by any other product. Supports datalogging, and can also datalog an external wideband O2 sensor.

Product: Split Second ARCII

Website: http://www.splitsec.com

Fuel matrix: NA

Ignition matrix: None

Replace MAF with MAP?: No

Programmable by owner?: Yes

Est. MSRP in USD: $1100

Comments: Allows crude fuel curve tuning. Visualizing the overall correction is difficult. The MAF is replaced with a bigger MAF. The unit is very pricey.

Product: Unichip

Website: http://www.dastek.co.za/

Fuel matrix: 17 x 12

Ignition matrix: 17 x 12

Replace MAF with MAP?: No

Programmable by owner?: No, dealer only

Est. MSRP in USD: $695

Comments: The 17 RPM points are defined from 500 to 8000 RPMS. It is not known how much correction is possible. The fuel curve is also segmented into 12 different engine loads, giving a programmable 17x12 fuel matrix. Timing correction is possible with a 17 x 12 matrix. The maximum correction again is not known. Unfortunately, the unit is not programmable by the owner.
