artinist
I finally replaced the engine and power steering oil coolers. the power steering cooler i used was originally an automatic transmission oil cooler form a mazda and the oil cooler i used was I believe from a ford thunderbird who i have Melayanton to thank for getting for me. our powersteering like almost every other cars does not come with suffecient cooling and on the roadrace track will boil and spill over. I have been using synthetic powersteering fluid which helped a lot with the boiling but it still needs better cooling to take the extra stress off the system. the added volume to the oil will be beneficial also. the stock oilcooler doesn't hold crap. i drained about 1/2 a cup of oil out of it. its a joke. Before: http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/before.jpg After: http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/after1.jpg I cut and bent the factory powersteering loop and ran some 3/8 rubber hose from the cooler over to those lines. http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/during1.jpg Here is the mouting bracket for the oil cooler. it mounts to the header panel using a couple of 90s. i had to move the cooler a bit down and forward to clear my IC lines. if you are using stock IC lines, this cooler will literally bolt right up. http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/during1.jpg Here is the mounting bracket for the steering cooler made of thin aluminum. i had to make a hole in the middle after I took the pictures to make room for the hood latch to work properly. http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/during2.jpg this damn car should have came with these in the first place. http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/after2.jpg chilled 20-50 martini, on the rocks. this thing WORKS. its surprisingly cool to the touch on the outlet. because of its dimensions and fit, i think this is the best oil cooler for our car. http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/after3.jpg

artinist
it wasnt that bad really. the hardest part was finding the metric AN fittings that connect to the oil filter adapter instead of the restrictive banjo fittings. from there I ran -8 (1/2") lines to the cooler. you can get the lines and the fittings form Oscar. heefner
Do you think that will affect the flow of air to your radiator and cause a rise in engine temp?
artinist
I am sure it will not have any adverse affects. if anything it will cool overall temps of the engine and make work easier for the radiator. the air coming out the back of it will be mixed with more air coming from below well before reaching the radiator. melayanton
I see you finally put that thing in, Good work Art! Works great ha! It worked perfect for me also. The oil cooler is from the early 90's Ford taurus sho for those who would like to use it. To answer heefner's question, it did not affect engine temps, actually it lowered the temps a bit. Hey Art wait til you see my new power steering pump oil cooler.
heefner
Thats a good point I didn't think about it that way. Very nice mod. How much extrea capcity do you think it added to the system?

Flyin_By_YOU
what kinda benefit is it to have an extra 1/2qt of oil?' eric
melayanton
what kinda benefit is it to have an extra 1/2qt of oil?' eric Think of it this way. Whats easier to boil, 1 quart of water or 2 quarts of water. More overall fluid disipates heat better. The oil cooler adds capacity with out going over oil pan capacity
Ryan_V
I believe B&M makes a oil cooler that has a fan fitted to it. That would be sweeeet. Looks good Art 8)

artinist
those coolers with the fans are around $
melayanton
B&M $200, or ford taurus SHO $10. Ill take the SHO, dont need a fan, trust me. The cold end of the cooler is barely warm, while the inlet side is blazing hot. Save the other $190 and upgrade the radiator instead.
pure_insanity
we was just discussing oil coolers and what not over on the a.t.v. boards. some of the high perf quads use a dry sump and an oil cooler, with a fan. a guy on the boards had mounted a couple 5" computer fans. they draw almost nothing in power and move a decent amount of air for an oil cooler. i was actually thinking of putting one of those basic same style oil coolers in the water cooler line either before or after the turbo. take out a bit of temps there.im saving that for when the motor goes into my blue quest in a month or so. artinist
I did some modifications to my oil lines. these stainless steel AN connections are really cool. they are used and not very expensive, if you want some, let me know. they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/1.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/2.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/3.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/4.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/5.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~antimpower/images/coolers/6.jpg
