You may recognize it, I bought it from a guy who said he jumped on here right after buying it, but had to turn around and sell it due to an unfortunate housing predicament.

1987 Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R

144,XXX miles

bone stock

It's a bit rough. I'm planning on trying to fix the bumper a bit, may need a new bumper beam (and there's a wrecker 2 hours north that has like 8 dead SQs). New tires soon too. Then I'm gonna remove all the smelly arse carpets and rear seats, get a lower seat and rails for me, possibly a black passenger seat, dash, console and door cards from the junkyard. Also getting a different shifter and steering wheel. I'm just gonna smooth out its rough edges and drive the crap out of it.

You're starting out on the same road I did......let me tell you how this goes down.

You buy a denty car for cheap, but it's good mechanically. You fix it up to run, and you get hooked. Then you decide to go to the body shop. The body shop gives you a figure that makes your heart palpitate.

So, then you you go buy a real nice one, and you do the fix up thing all over again. Oh, and somewhere along the way, you acquire 5 or 10 parts cars.

You'll find out one thing in the process.......as long as you have patience, you will find that these cars are very easy to work on. Get yourself a shop manual, and use it good. It has the secrets. All of them.

Welcome, and have fun with the car.

Expect every small thing you do it or every small thing that breaks to turn into a big hassle.

IE: an oil change to turn into new rod bearings

a set of brake pads to turn into new calipers and rotors

new exhaust to turn into a bigger turbo

new head unit to turn into rewiring your entire stereo system due to bad grounds

welcome! nice starion, and subie, Im currentley helping my buddy convert his 93 imprezza to RWD...gonna be fun

but yes...these cars are extremely addicting. and dont beat the crap out of the car unless you know it can handle the abuse, these cars are old and tend to have alot of problems from previous owners not taking care of them.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think I'll just turn this into my build/repair thread.

SO, I found a transmission on craigslist for... quite cheap. I'm planning on buying it if the guy confirms that it came out of an intercooled model. Says he only took it out because he built a more powerful motor and wants a more rugged tranny to handle it. Even if it's a dog, I haven't lost that much money. I also ordered up a new Sachs clutch kit.

So, I need some help. Judging by the way my shifter slops about within each gear, I think the shifter bushing is toast:

STOP! There needs to be a gasket sealing the shifter to the trans. If you clean ALL the gear oil away silicone will work. Also, there is a nylon fulcrum bushing inside the lower shifter boot that is frequently broken. Once you lower the trans, if you see a brown, plastic chips in the area below the shifter.......your's is broken.

http://starquest.i-x.net/viewtopic.php?t=980

That thread says that said shifter bushings are only sold with a new shifter assembly, but that's a $160 kit. I've heard that some people use D50 bushings. Is that a good option? Is there any other way to get a bushing (and a gasket for that matter)? Are there any other gaskets I'll need when embarking on a transmission replacement?

I dont have the link but someone was making shifter bushings out of some kind of metal. I think it was in the group purchase section. I got mine from the dealer but that was prolly 6 years ago.

Alright I ordered one from the local Mitsu dealer. It's amazing how hard that little piece is to track down. In the meantime, bought this today:

Called Mitsubishi of Concord, the parts guy Jose said he ordered me one. For you or anyone in the same situation I would hesitate to do the same until it arrives and I can verify for you that it's the right part. I can also give a part number when it arrives.

yusssss thank you! if Jose doesn't come through for me, that's excellent to have. Thank you!

Anyways,

Awesome day. Woke up early, picked up my friend Alex, put gas in the Starion and drove to San Jo to see a friend from another forum who owns the F430 Scuderia pictured here and here, to pick up the Momo shift knob he offered me fo' free (happyface). Great success, drove home, got in my mum's Expedition and drove up to Napa to get parts from conquest707 (thanks again man!):

WINNAR!

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn130/volleyballurrrr/Starion/DSC04606.jpg

That's right, a pair of Ron Burgundy seats, bumper, mount and foglamps, driver's side fender, lazy eye headlight housings and motors, and the thing in the plastic bag is an oil cooler. You guys already knew that but this is mostly a carbon copy of what I posted on other forums haha

How much you ask? Free. All of it.

So I got home, stored all my loot, and set about replacing that ghastly shift knob. This is what followed (there is profanity, it was an upsetting experience):

You can see that it got chewed up as I tried to pry it off...

In the end though, I was victorious... Thanks again to my buddy Nick!

thanks to scotty dont for my new transmission. it should be going in this weekend, ive already cleaned it up a bit:

before

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn130/volleyballurrrr/Starion/IMG_0177.jpg

after

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn130/volleyballurrrr/Starion/IMG_0184.jpg

my shifter bushing arrived. seems to be the correct part:

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn130/volleyballurrrr/Starion/IMG_0189.jpg

on my way back from picking it up, however, the Starion overheated a bit. I noticed the temp was high and the oil pressure was low so I pulled into a gas station to make sure there it had oil. it did, albeit dark oil. i eased it home. when i opened the hood at home, water came out of the the overflow reservoir onto the street, and i could hear water in the reservoir boiling. I let it cool for about 45 minutes, then went to top it up with water and coolant. surprisingly, it only took about 4 oz.

i checked the oil again to make sure it was normal and there were no signs of anything leaking in via a blown head gasket, that checked out okay.

then i started it again, it fired right up, but the temp gauge steadily crept up. then i noticed that none of the three fans surrounding the radiator were running. my dad poked around and asked if maybe the fuse was blown. in the main fuse box panel thing in the interior, there's no fuse for cooling fans.

SO, my question is, is there an in-line fuse to the cooling fan that may have blown? I'm no pro at wiring diagrams, but the 86 service manual (page 7) (SQGarage doesn't have the 87 manual. d'oh!) appears to show a fuse between the battery and the fan motors.

the other thing i think it could be is a faulty thermosensor that just isn't telling the fans to turn on.

halp plz

all fans are power'd directly from the batt by way of a fuse link,, their operation is control'd by relays,, the relays are activate'd by thermo sensors on the bottom of the rad,, ,1st test the fan wires for power if they have power go on to the termo sensors

you ground the wire to activate the relays , one will turn on 1 fan, the other both fans

okay that helps. of course ive just discovered that the fans do run <_< , just not till it's boiling lava hot. must be a thermo sensor. is it possible that one or both of the sensors are faulty or calibrated too high?
