ColdScrip
So I went and took pics for an update tonight. You guys are keeping me from my Numerical Analysis homework ! I appreciate all the comments guys. It helps to know that others appreciate the work just as much. So here we go! A much needed update. Motor in and in testing/tuning phase: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P7230036.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P7230042.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P7230037.jpg Underneath shots: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P7230038.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P7230040.jpg My first time painting alone! I feel I have to make a comment here. Many car enthusiasts, especially those my age, are deathly afraid of painting car parts. I was as well and I admit it is entirely cutthroat. The slightest mistake and you hate the work you've done. However if you just do it, the end result will always bring a smile to your face. I have gotten used to the high anxiety cutthroat feeling and have even impressed myself with how well things went. So the next time you are looking for a body guy, give it a go first. Ask questions! Fiji swirly goo! http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8290079.jpg Ready for paint: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8290080.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8290081.jpg Avoid the haze - after clearcoat: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8300082.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8300088.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8300089.jpg Behind fenders: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8300085.jpg Doors: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8300083.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070110.jpg Hood: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8300084.jpg Proud of my valve cover http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8300086.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P8300087.jpg Sideskirts/header panels: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070109.jpg Headlight assemblies: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070112.jpg Update continued... ColdScrip
This is showing how I put chassis saver on inside of the side skirts to further prevent rust: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070138.jpg What I did while there tonight...assembled the headlights: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070139.jpg Ever hear a squeak when your headlights went up? These rotating parts are the source. I tried packing grease into them with no results. I took a paperclip and slowly pushed grease down which surprisingly fixed the squeak. Everything on these assemblies moves with ease now with no noise. And yes the grease just had to be blue as well http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070140.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070141.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070143.jpg Other rotating points of the assemblies: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070142.jpg New speakers: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070131.jpg Fiji on the backing plates instead of previous silver: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070132-1.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070133.jpg Overview: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/P9070137.jpg http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/p9070130.jpg I still haven't burned out at all. In face I am more excited than I have ever been to work on this car. Was out there everyday this weekend after work. Of course it helps when your Dad lets you take his car out and your mouth waters from how much fun driving these cars are. Alright well I\'m off to do some Numerical Analysis problems. I hope that satisfies you guys for now Edited September 8, 2009 by ColdScrip

ColdScrip
Noice. Very. You really need an anodizing kit, though. To place zinc or the like on the bolts? I'll go through individual bolts in the bay once the car is done.
starquestJOE
Cold your my HERO~!!~ The more you put updates up and i read and reread this post. I want to do the same to my own car. In the end you KNOW everything is the way you want it. And when some one asks who built the car. You can proudly say ME sir. Something i may have done different then you but, by no means have you done one thing wrong. I wish alot more people would or could put this kind on time into these cars like you have. And others like Kev. I will be the next one on the list of full resto starquest.

Just did my rear fenderwells and gas tank area this weekend... sucked. I'll give you more credit though, cause you put everything back together stock like... f--k putting that dash and wire harness back in.. You deserve a trophy. I don't want someone else to handle something for me I want to do it so then I know how to do it. It is always good to hear differences in opinion...what would you have done differently? Your not too far away from me. Hopefully we could meet sometime. yeah I'm really jelous of your progress. AND I HATE REMOVING UNDERCOATING!!! I swear its the worst job ever. ever. Man I know....that undercoating was such a pain. I'm going to be doing it to my Dad's car so that will be more fun hah. When going through the car I didn't want to hack anything. I have seen many cars, especially hondas, when the kid will point out what they did and i'm like "Why the hell did you..." so I wanted to make sure that everything was put back in its stock location. It takes a lot more time. A lot of my assembly time was going back and forth between my car, a reference car, and the service manual. I can confidently say that about %95 of the bolts on the car are the correct bolt that was there stock. And hell dude don't be jealous hah. I'd gladly give you a hand with your car if I ever have the chance. If its a quest and your a cool dude I don't mind at all.
Killtodie
This is awesome, such a great job. But not to be a negative nancy, all the fancy things aside, I noticed that you are putting in back many of the old, uncleaned interior parts, how come? why not upgrade the sway bars too? and a new air intake, coil overs maybe? besideds that amazing, I wish I had a garage and equipment to tear it down like you did

ColdScrip
This is awesome, such a great job. But not to be a negative nancy, all the fancy things aside, I noticed that you are putting in back many of the old, uncleaned interior parts, how come? why not upgrade the sway bars too? and a new air intake, coil overs maybe? besideds that amazing, I wish I had a garage and equipment to tear it down like you did The interior parts were cleaned but thats the result of not having doors on for a month or two. A lot of dust accumulates in this shop. If your also wondering why some of the center console emtal pieces weren't painted it was mianly because they have a lot of rotating parts which rules out sandblasting. Throwing paint over it may also interfere slightly with the performance of those parts. So those went in and were cleaned/regreased. The interior will get recleaned along with carpet dye to make it look better once the car is ready for the rest of the interior. As for the sway bars, intake, and coil overs the issue is money. Those will be done eventually but i'm still a college student. I had to prioritize my money. Hence its more important to put money into the motor then lets say a fancy intake system. The intake system is very easy to change later on down the road when I have the funds compared to something like forged pistons. This car is a good example of me trying to get the best I can out of putting more labor than money into the car since I don't make enough to put all the upgrades I would like to have on to the car. Plus I wouldn't like to call the car "Done" once the restore is finished either Edited September 12, 2009 by ColdScrip
pc85
You rock! No way I can do that with my '85; would have too many left over parts and afraid wouldn't be able to find fittings and parts that would have to be replaced. Example: wanted to powder coat front and rear suspension but couldn't find replacement bushings so had to settle for epoxy coating. Good luck, hope to see it some day.joe

ColdScrip
Well I have been trying to hunt down my power window problem before doing body work. But heres the latest. http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100129.jpghttp://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100130.jpghttp://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100131.jpghttp://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100132.jpghttp://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100133.jpghttp://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100134.jpg ETACS was preventing power locks and int. wipers from working. Unfortunately not the power windows. Talk about a crappy board!http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100135-1.jpghttp://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100137-1.jpghttp://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100140-1.jpghttp://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100143.jpg Check out the donor ETACS: http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/PA100145.jpghttp://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww192/ColdScrip/pa100146.jpg So yup, electrical diagnosis time. ColdScrip
whens it all getting painted? Soon as I can. I want to work out the power window issue beforehand. I'd rather not be digging into the car looking for an electrical issue with fresh paint. Too bad I don't have as much time as I did before classes started. spoolinturbo
what's your power window problem? Do you have no operation on both sides? did you pull the main switch apart? Those contacts can come loose, burn up. On one car I had one broke and stuck to open, the other stuck to close. Two levers for up, two for down. Could have maybe burned the relay? ColdScrip
Sweet sweet satisfaction! I sat down with my Dad and had him teach me how to diagnose an electrical problem. I went out there tonight and found the problem. I was pretty happy to find the problem as well as have my first electrical diagnosis under my belt. Turns out one of the wires to the ETACS was so badly corroded that there was no connection. The bad part is I may have to splice in a lot of wires to put in a better connectors. Also took a wheel home to polish since college has been keeping from going out to the shop. So I took some work home
yokomo
these look sweet on a fiji http://evolutioneffects.com/images/europa10hblpu.jpg, let me know if you need any computers or chassis harness parts, i went with a "custom" harness so to say. jwrape
This is an incredible build. Your VERY fortunate to have "DAD" as your Dad to help you. Not to jack your thread, but I have a Wipers problem myself and was wondering where the ETAC is located.
strang3majik
beneath the drivers seat. And...yes, undercoating sucks. Though, on my dads Charger resto, we used a 3500 psi pressure washer. That made it come off in sheets once it got under it Can't wait to see the finished product though...she'll be a beaut
ColdScrip
Yokomo, those wheels look sweet! They would look very nice on a fiji, Also thanks for the harness/computer offer. So far so good. I have yet to test a lot of the interior lightning and such but from what I can test (which has been a lot) I have been able to find and replace things not working. jwrape, yeah this car really wouldn't be much without him. I told him that I wanted to do this stuff because I feel thats really how you learn it. As a result, I feel extremely comfortable with these cars. Have even done a few reports in college over these cars because of the expansive knowledge i've learned about them from this rebuild. I will soon be working on my Dad's car. That is once mine is done. Also yes the ETACS is attached to the frame with 2 bolts. It is under the drivers seat. I was able to remove it without removing the driver seat on the donor car. The only problem it will give you for wipers is that the int. wipers function will not work. The wipers themselves will work. strang3, yup can't wait man. I'll be doing the underbody and suspension on my Dad's next. UPDATE: Classes end friday. I have a VERY realistic goal of this car being completed before next semester (around January 10th-ish). So that means in about 5-6 days I will be going full force on this thing. Whats left:1. Some electrical repair2. Paint the car and body parts3. Assemble the body parts to the car4. Assemble the interior5. Install Mookeh's SS 304 3' exhaust, gauge overlays, center of dash boost gauge all wired properly etc...6. Test everything and make sure I'm satisfied7. Detail the car completely. Wax, dust, clean, re-dye interior pieces if needed, everything works and works well in the car.8. Shove the car to the side of the shop, slap a car cover over it till winter is over and take a nap being completely content with things Honestly...that to do list is nothing. As soon as this thing is painted its all downhill. So once my car is pushed to the side, I'll make sure my Bro's car is finished which would free up a spot. In which case I'll begin the front and rear suspension rebuild on my Dad's car similar to how I did mine. I really can't wait to work on another one.
