importwarrior
i need to know what the S and L terminals - wires do in the alternator???i can't seem to find info and would like a refresher please. Thank you for the help. L ? S? Thanks. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d182/Professor-Quest123/Batt%20Alt/AL-34.jpg
ucw458
Signal and lamp. Lamp is for the alt light. Signal gets 12v+ when the ignition is on. The signal wire is what turns the alt on and powers the regulator.
importwarrior
Is the signal what tels the alt what voltage output is?
Turbo Cary
Is the signal what tels the alt what voltage output is? No I believe Signal is for the gauge. The L for lamp is to activate the battery light on the dash. That's what I took from what was said
ucw458
No the signal wire isn't for the gauge. Nor does it tell the alt what the voltage output is. The signal wire just turns on the alt. 12v+ when the key is on that's all. The gauge gets power from the ignition switch.
importwarrior
so the "L" only turns on the gauge dash light to say alt is not working.thats it? what tells the alt that just for example, it is producing 11 volts and you need to up the output.i know the regulator adjusts output voltage but something has to provide the current voltage produced. ucw458
Yes it only turns on the dash light. The regulator handles all output. It monitors output voltage and adjusts the voltage it sends to the stator. The regulator is a variable power supply. If you send 12 volts to the stator you get around 35 volts from the alt. So the regulator feeds around 3-5 volts to the stator depending on current load conditions to get 13-14 volts output. The 12v+ S terminal powers the regulator.
