Preludedude
So I have a local 1/8th mile drag strip we like to frequent. Once I get the Conquest tuned with the MAFT and running good, Id like to up the boost and see what kinds of times I can achieve. My setup: -Wiseco Pistons-Ported head from DAD w/ OS valves-52mm TB w/ ported intake manifold and ported mixer housing-S16G turbo-Full 3" Exhaust-Hardpipes w/ stock intercooler-Fidanza FW-ACT HD Clutch-MAFT w/ 3.5" MAS-etc I was checking out the chart and seen some people were running: http://www.sqperformance.com/?page_id=2 NitroNick ran 8.0 with TBI/16G/50shotStarcon88 ran 8.28 with TBI/16GBlue_Crush ran 8.40 with TBI/16G/MAFTPotamus ran 8.7 with TBI/16G/1G MASMontyTSI ran 8.8 with TBI/16GBurton ran 8.9 with TBI/16G What should I set boost at for daily driving? And what is the max I should turn it up to while at drag strip?
speedyquest
Where you stop for boost will depend on a few things. Do you have a wideband installed yet? If not I would spend the money on a good one (around $200) before you start turning up your boost. You should have one anyway just for the simple fact that you are running a maft. I'm not sure how else you would even tune it properly. Otherwise if you know your air / fuel ratios Id say turn it up till you feel comfortable with it and making sure your air fuel ratios are still ok and your not getting detonation.
Preludedude
I already have my maft installed and tweaked enough to get car running. I have an innovate wideband I haven't installed yet. That's next so I can tune the car properly. I've been reading the maft settings threads to see what AF ratio I need at each stage (idle, mid, wot). What are most people maxing out boost at with a 16g?
speedyquest
Well here is a break down of what you should be looking for a/f ratio wise... Idle: In an ideal world you would want your a/f ratio to be 14.7 but our cars tend to like something closer to 13.7 or so. That is what I've found anyway.Mid: This is really going to depend on how much load your engine is under to be honest, but I typically see between 12.8 and 13.5 around here.Wot: You definitely want to be in a safe range here. Too lean and you will detonate. Too rich and you not only rob yourself of power but you will foul plugs or cause un-even / consistant burn. You will get different answers about this depending on where you look but a good consensus (and my personal opinion) is that you want to be between 10.8 (very safe) and 11.3. You will see guys say 11.8 or even 12 is ok but I personally wouldn't run that unless your running e85, meth injection, or know for sure your tune is perfect. As far as max boost on a 16g goes, well that depends on a few things. The first thing to look at is the compressor maps for that turbo. I'm going completely off the top of my head here but I seem to remember the 16g liking to be in the range of 15psi to 25psi. Really you need to pay attention and make sure that your not going to lean out your car and run out of fuel. Hope this helps. P.S. Install that wideband asap. And do not turn up your boost or really thrash your car till you know exactly what your car is doing a/f ratio wise. It could spell disaster for you. importwarrior
from what i know most tune for a particular max boost setting with the proper supporting mods and tune for daily drivingmost of the time they just set it and dont usually adjust. the tune is the most important thing. DieHARDmitsu.
for the boost you plan on running, stick to 11-11.
Funky Phil
Boost pressure in indicative of engine efficiency. You NEVER build anything around how much "boost" you intend to run. You do it for the power curve you wish to achieve. You didnt mention tires therefor you are not looking at it correctly. I had a coworker with a new 5.0 GT. From day 1 I said get tires. He instead bought a tune, intake and exhaust. went from 8.5's @ 85mph to 8.4's at 88mph. A year later, I loaned him some ET Streets. All he wanted to do was beat his 8.4. He went 7.60 that night. creakyjoints
Friend had a s16 on his set at 16 psi. Ran it for 96k at that setting with no issues. Car made 250 rwhp.
