speedyquest
You don't have to join the military to get that education. If your joining just for that I personally see it as your signing up for ... 3 years is it? for a education you can get in 2. Yea I know you have to pay for it but I think too many people join simply for money or free schooling.

Ono
Standard enlistment is 4 years unless the Navy is offering some kind of WaZoo enlistment package to bolster numbers, but I seriously doubt it. You would do 4 yrs and 4 yrs inactive reserve, that means after your active duty enlistment is up, Uncle Sam can call you back up to 4 yrs later. tsiconquest88
wow sorry to hear this lol. And i agree if you think u want to go through that s*** for an education go for it. People that really want to go fine but simply for an education, you surely dont even really "want" to go and your going to be miserable for 4 years! Ono
you won't get called back. I didn't say he would, but he's obviously not read in to what's expected out of him commitment wise and was just telling him what will be expected out of him if he enlists. Yes, My buddy just enlisted 2 years ago and it is 4 years active or 4 years inactive. Or you can do what he did and went 6 years active 2 years inactive. Karguy
Times have changed over the years. If you haven't checked, do yourself a favor and contact all 4 branches of the service. Get a copy of the contract for each. Unless you have emotional reasons for joining the Navy check em all out. If you don't feel like a man yet; join the Marine Corp If you like spending 6 months out in the middle of the ocean sharing a bunk with another troop, join the Navy. By the way the Army and Navy are the only two services where if available and you qualify you can guarantee your job. The other two you are guaranteed a job field, fields may have 6-8 specialties in them. Air Force - good jobs poor promotion rate. But dang the chow hall food is good, and probably the best barracks. Army, fastest promotion rates (more cash), over 220 jobs to choose from (to include linen specialist and space Command), has more aircraft than the Air Force, more boats than the Navy and more grunts than the Marine Corps. Either way i commend you for considering serving your country. Peace...
Skullzaflare
it seems you guys info on the navy is a bit datedi just talked to the lady this morning. she explained i will remain on land, training and edu for the job i choose from what is in my skill criteria after taking the practice test, she is now trying to get me to go for the nuclear side of training, instead of the computer specialist/ITalso, there is no commitment unless i choose a jobnext wednesday i take the real asvab, at which point, they run a morale and physical on me as well, then 2 more tests, at which point it will generate a criteria for my skills, and give me the options i can choose from. all of which have a certain deploy date etci have all the paperwork at the house
Komeuppance
Sounds like a good opportunity if you have the want and drive to do so, it will open many more doors for you as well. Technology
And you'll be in that club for the rest of your life. Always have something to talk about with others, probably get some cool forearm tattoo, and some crazy life experiences. I often wish I had done some military service in my early 20s. In fact, joining right after HS would have been the best idea I suppose. Oh well! If you go, good luck. If not, good luck. At least if you join, the next four years will be basically guided. Based on you comment about the Marine Corps I'm guessing that a Marine must have either kicked your tail or screwed your old lady. It's a fact that the Marine Corps produces the best trained, most disciplined and most respected troops out there. So why post a crappy comment like that? The bottom line is, serving your country is an honorable thing and making comments like that is only going to tick people off, especially if you have never served, and I'm 100% certain you were never in the Marines. BTW, it's Marine Corps, not Marine Corp

BTW, it's Marine Corps, not Marine Corp Ono, Are you in the Corp? Either way if you were to hang out near any recruiting station across the US over the past 20 plus years you'd have a pretty good idea how the Corp gets most of their recruits. It's the become a man, be tough, crawl through dirt, go where no regular person would dare. Climb the highest mountains. I could go on but I won't. It's been a very productive recruiting angle for years so that's why i listed it under my thoughts on the Corps. If you ask 150k married people with kids (or more if you have the time, I certainly don't), very few will tell you they regreted having kids. Even though it's a FACT that almost all of them have regretted having kids at one point or another. The fact is no person with low self esteem would tell me he wants to join the Corp to become a man. He would tell me something like you wrote, training, discipline yada, yada, yada. Why someone joins doesn't really matter. In the long run; what they gained in knowledge and experience does. The fact that Skullz feels the way you do, prove's how effective the Corp campaign is. It's only my opinion that Skullz already feels like he's a man, or he'd be considering the Corp and not the navy, as the Corp last i checked had IT/computer jobs. It's a fact that the Marine Corps produces the best trained, most disciplined and most respected troops out there. I don't know but I think I heard of a very important mission that happended in May, where another branch of service was used. Skullz, if you want IT/computer stuff, then you need to stick to your guns. Nuclear sounds great and it appears the lady has you leaning that way already.. Some of them can be pretty good talkers. Like i said before, i commend anyone looking to join the service. Gold wings earned 19 March 1994.
Karguy
An interesting quote I stumble across. "Paratroopers are about the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever witnessed. They treat their service as if it were some kind of cult, plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making themselves up to look like insane fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths, worshipping their units almost as if they were a Gods, and making weird animal noises like a band of savages....... They'll fight like rabid dogs at the drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action, and are the cockiest sons of ***** I have ever known. Most have the foulest mouths and drink well beyond man's normal limits, but their high spirits and sense of brotherhood set them apart and, generally speaking, the United States Army Paratroopers I've come in contact with are the most professional soldiers and the finest men I have ever had the pleasure to meet." - An Anonymous Canadian Citizen
