If you go back to pull a part, grab the oil squirters, driveshaft, torque tube, diff, axels, hubs, front strut housings/spindels, ect, ect,

How's the windshield? Are there still 2 1988's there?

yes. the only one with a driveshaft lived underwater and I couldnt unbolt it last time I was there :/

there are two 88's there though I'll take some pictures of them next time I go (I'm gonna probably have to get some door handles)

and all that would cost a fortune haha but I might make a post on here and see if anyone needs any of the stuff thats out there next time I go..

I decided to go ahead and remove all the stuff from the engine bay in order to paint it while the engine is out. After taking tons of reference pictures I removed the front panel and grille:

And the front bumper, which had rust on the underside. As far as I know it's the only rusty area on the car. Ive looked it over pretty thouroughly thus far. Its not too bad though. I'll put pictures of that up when I work on it. I continued to dissasemble things off the front of the car:

And everything I took off I layed down in front of the car in the same relative position so I wouldnt lose track of where things went. There's sooo much stuff in there  haha

Should have the engine bay cleaned and prepped for paint by the end of the weekend. Hopefully...

Went back to pull a part today and grabbed the other oil sqirters out of the bare (and very rusty) block. I have a feeling theyre going to scrap the rougher of the two quests soon. Theres really nothing useable left on it as its completely rusted out and the interiors ripped to shreads... Also got an idler pully (jasper decided to use a GM a/c pulley in its place on my engine lol). and a D50 gear box. I'm gonna put manual steering on the car and see how that goes. Im going to do it in a way that I can just bolt the power steering back on though. Im also looking into converting to manual brakes. I just want to simplify things up and have less to go wrong later.

Heres the engine bay right before I power washed it. I hand washed it before that but it really came clean after this picture was taken. The clean picture will come with the next update as I was too dirty to pick the camera back up after this.

EDIT: I also boxed up my cam today and am shipping it to schnieder (sp?) tomorrow. going with the 274..

I think that "Cyberquest" has recently done a manual steering conversion. I'm sure he'd help you out with the details.

Looks like Ive decided to leave the power steering on the car for now after talking with someone who has one with manual steering. I wasn't worried about the turning effort, but really dont want to lose the sporty feel and responsiveness in the steering... still contemplating manual brakes though...

Stopped by a couple places and got paint quotes today...

Took my steering coupler apart to grease it:

Also took the wiper cowl off the car:

http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/7464/sdc10577.jpg

And tomorrow will get it ready for paint:

did you ever get the paint quote?

He's painting it himself at his [unkle?]'s shop if I'm not mistaken.

Speaking of steering, Frenchi... installed steering rack bushings today (on a WRX for those who don't know me) and, having only driven it down a culdesac and back, they're pretty *ing awesome.

If whiteline has things for Conquests / Starions... I'm satisfied on 2/2 of their products now ^^

Im actually painting it in our shop (where the car is now, in all the pictures). It's not the first time we'll have painted a car there, my dad actually painted my truck in there a few years ago and it turned out really nice so hopefully It will turn out good. Most of the premise of this car was so that I would learn how to do a bunch of stuff.

and yeah thats the new fan mod

Today:

prepped the engine bay for paint:

needed to sand blast a little area of rust (had only barely started to pit) where an apparent brake fluid spill had caused the paint to peel off:

What I did with the electrical lines before sand blasting:

Tomorrow will be mostly taping off and buying paint and thursday will probably entail spraying the engine bay.

Are you going to be doing the engine bay with the same as exterior paint, or with a different coating to be more durable? There's one example o a water-based coating that was really really scratch & chemical resiatant and req'd no clearcoat etc... Ill try to ind and link in a second...

I can't find it. Bleh. But it was a water-based, mostly metallic coating that he sprayed on with a normal paint gun, on the engine bay and interior of a race car. The giy hit it with hammers and scraped it with chisels and it was still fine, and it's supposed to be lighter thab paint.

Today:

Used what I thought was rustoleum primer on the bare metal in the engine bay:

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/777/sdc10580dt.jpg

While waiting on it to dry I started to work on repairing the rust in the front bumper:

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/5328/sdc10583u.jpg

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/7170/sdc10584b.jpg

Then, alas, after reading the can again I realized I had used rustoleum paint. <_<

Used acetone to wipe it off and sanded like heck to get it off there. Then went to town and got PRIMER. loll

After that I decided to take the fenders off to paint the whole front of the car in one sitting. The inner/ under stuff anyways. THe exterior will all be done at the same time...

Looking good, brother man. Just go ahead and pull that harness out. When you get the engine back in you can look into to doing a mild wire tuck. That's one of the things I wish I had done when my bay was empty...

the harness is nuts... it goes through the firewall on both sides and runs across the front of the car too... I looked into pulling it out but its just gonna be ridiculous

Today I sanded down the paint on the part between the hood and the wiper cowl then washed the whole engine bay again and wrapped all tape around stuff and finally painted in between the fenders with some rustoleum auto primer and paint (I dont want to run out of my good paint and its 137 dollars a gallon haha plus noone sees it anyways and there wasnt even paint on it before so dont rag on me)

The part I left red at the back is where I plan on painting the blue up to after I take the door off (since you'll see it in the door jam)

woke up early and primered the car:

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/7809/sdc10595.jpg

Then let the primer set up before block sanding:

Then applied sealer to where the brake fluid had eaten it off:
