From your screen name you have an 88? Sounds like someone put an 87 or older flywheel on. Does it have a dowel pin? Has the motor been changed?

Sounds like at some point before you bought the car someone did a motor swap. How about the transmission? The VIN number is stamped on the upper back of the block in a flat spot of the casting. The VIN on the tranny is stamped on the upper right side. You can see if either have been changed. You need to know for sure because the throw out bearing is different for a non intercooled transmission. The 88/89 tranny case had a cast alum. pan, the pre 88 had a tin pan but the tin pan was on both intercooled and non intercooled cases.

I run an excedy clutch in my '86. Got a 240mm flywheel (88-89) resurfaced it and installed. No problems.

Sure sounds to me like you have the smaller flywheel in your car.

Here's a pic of an 87 or older flywheel. Notice no hole for the dowel pin in the crank.

The flywheel will go on any year motor, 83-87 has a hole pattern drilled out for a 225mm clutch DISC, the 88/89 is for a 240mm. Its doubtful someone went backwards on a flywheel so I'd more suspect a motor change not a tranny change. The VIN is on the parts so you can look at it and tell what year it was from and if it were in an intercooled car or not. The tranny case also has a VIN on it. If there is no VIN it could possibly be from a widebody 86 or an 85.5 if not you must use the thicker throw out bearing and longer slave rod. The upper passenger side of the bellhousing just about 10 o'clock if you look at it from the front there is a flat spot on the top of the bellhousing and that's where the VIN is stamped. in the sequence you'll see either and H or an N for the 8th digit. H is non-intercooled, N is intercooled. Same for the block. You can look at it from under the car, it will be on your right below the headgasket line and its a flat spot about 1"x3" and the VIN is in tiny digits about 1/8" tall.

Yes, just get a 240mm flywheel and put it on, I recommend having the new wheel resurfaced and balanced. Then you can use the new clutch you already have and nothing else needs to be changed.

I got a 240mm flywheel from Dad a while back. He may have more.

Can't remember what he charged me, but it was a good deal ready to bolt up.

That almost looks like the non intercooled throw out bearing its too hard to tell and if its not you still need to know which its supposed to have and that's 100% dependent on the transmission case and has nothing at all to do with which year flywheel, disc or pressure plate you put with it. That's why I said you need to look at the VIN on the bellhousing its the only way you will know. People have been putting in the wrong combinations for years and just didn't know because some clutch catalogs omit descriptions of the 85.8-87 model year span when there were two models and while the disc and plate are the same, the throw out bearing used with them IS different. If the tranny has a cast aluminum pan then you have the 88/89 and you need the intercooled throw out bearing and don't need to bother with the VIN as the other case has a tin pan. If it has a tin pan is when you must look at the VIN or measure from the bellhousing surface to the pivot ball and compare to a known case. This would be a good time to just buy an aluminum flywheel if you are interested in one of those. They will have both hole patterns.
