Jehu
Since my speedo is currently out, I would like to know how fast I'm going. If I'm doing 3K in 5th in my 86ESi-R, how fast am I going?

Fanta
OK, cool. How about at 4K? And 3K in 4th? Thanks for the info! 4k will be roughly 80mph. 3k in 4th is about 60-65mph I believe. Check your speedo cable to the tranny, make sure it didn't just come loose ( its known to happen ). Worst case scenario, I have about 3 or 4 gauge clusters laying around in case the problem lies there. Personally, keep it @ 65-70mph. A) the car will get great gas mileage. There have been police out EVERYWHERE this entire week laser and pulling people over on 75/85/285, so I can only imagine they're also on 400. Last thing you need is to get pulled over, get a ticket for speeding, and possibly get a fix it ticket as well ( those aren't cheap, trust me, I know... )

Is there a post or something that discusses the ratios and what it means for speeds at each RPM? I know in my old Prelude, it was 3K and I'd be doing 60 (in 5th of course)...4K and I'd be doing 80. Basically multiply by 2. Unfortunately, I didn't have a working speedo long enough to figure this out on my own for the SQ.

Shelby
just fix the darn thing and be done , nappa should be able to get it for you,it's nothing real special for those that have theirs working , it is a par of normal maintiance on a 20 yr old car to pull and relube or clean the old cable ,, it's did a lot of turning over the yrs,, same as any cable driven speedo on any car
Big Al
Replacing the speedo cable is cake in these cars as long as you don't drive long enough on the busted one that it tears the internal lining up. Mine did that. I was lucky it busted near the trans so I could clear it up with a coat hanger.

In the mean time, I don't need to get a ticket... Thanks for the help everyone.

On one of them, i can hear it clicking in the speedo cluster. Im guessing it means it broke up there?

Im guessing it means it broke up there? if you hear it clicking its prolly not in place on the back of the speedo. as in, not fully engaged. you can remove the cluster and grab the end of the cable with some pliers and pull the cable out of its housing. clean it up really good and put it back with lots of clean grease and you will be surprised how smoothly it will work. its much easier than you may think. marso
If you do decide to get a new one get it from Mitsubishi. It comes with a new firewall grommet, scuff guards and holding brackets. Exactly as original. Cost is a little more. Maybe 5 bucks.
