Fog lamp bulbs

Might be a lame question, but what type of bulbs are in the fog lamps. Do you gain access to them from the front?

They are of the H3 type and you have to remove the fog light assembly from the bumper. Take the bezel off and then remove the screws (3) and pull the lamp assembly out. Remove the protective rubber boot and then you can remove the bulb. Pretty simple.

I'm putting HID's in my fog lights in a week or so.

 

I had a fog light bulb pop tonight, so I ordered some HID's for it. Some think it will melt the housings... I was always told they use less power and generate less heat than a typical Halogen... But we'll see for sure... especially since I run my fog lights as my main source of lighting.

H3 HID kits are tricky to use for our housings and small projectors because some H3 kits use the regular length D2S or D2R bulbs, which are WAY longer than H3's and will hit the internal shroud and will fail to seat correctly in the base. There used to be a HID H3 bulb that was short like a regular H3, but I haven't seen or looked for it in a year or two.

 

 

Like all HID kits though, make a good fused wiring harness with relays. Do not rely on the stock one. It will fail eventually(if not right away), and it will cause an electrical fire.

Got my 8000k HID kit today. Might start installing it tonight since I have a bum foglight still. :lol:

8000K is going to be hot and will add a purpleish tint to the light. Mostly though it will likely cause a lot of oncoming drivers to get mad. I would also make sure that you don't shine them toward a cop. Nobody I know of has the ability to aim them to pass the 52 measurements that the DOT requires for highway use.

The bulbs will fit fine, with some work. They are approx twice as long as the originals. I'll have to heat the lights and remove the lenses, so that I can access the bulb "shield" to lengthen it it so that the bulb doesn't hit it.

 

I'll definitely have pictures after they are installed.

Oh... you posted the color temp... haha... I was too busy looking at the pics.

 

Might want to take pics along the way of your install, since most guys are afraid to do something like that.

 

Should be pretty sweet!! Have you thought about getting the running lamps to match?? I forgot what bulb size they are, but I know you can get matching ones to your color temp.

You mean the small bulb next to the fog lights? I wasn't aware they made any such "HID" kit for those (They're either 168 or 194, I can't remember which) I'll probably end up putting white LED bulbs in those, eventually. I also want to get the conversion headlight assemblies and run HID's in the regular headlights as well.

 

But, those are not really on the priority list, as I want to get the car painted before I do anything else. The only reason I'm replacing these is because one blew out on me last week or so.

 

It won't be long until I can start sanding the paint off it, so as soon as spring gets here I can spray the car in a fresh new coat of Fiji!

 

Anyway, the install kit doesn't really need to be documented, though I can if it's requested. The HID kit I bought comes with a pre-made harness with a relay and a fuse block. Pretty much plug and play, aside from a few wires that need to be modified on the existing harness of the car to get the power for switching the relay on/off. It was relatively inexpensive, too. $140 and comes with a 36 month warranty on everything in the kit.

I would wire it up so that the signal for the relay came from the stock fog switch.

Stock FOG Switch? Where is it at? is it one of the buttons on gage cluster? or on blinker arm? I cannot seem to make them turn on and or find a way to do it.. Lame I am lame.... Thanx

Good news is... they fit without hitting the bulb shield! So I don't need to modify it!

Didn't really need to even pull the lenses apart, but I figured since I was taking them out I'd clean them up and paint the buckets, polish the lenses, etc. etc.

i cant even get mine out since two of the screws are so badly corroded, they stripped right out...so, now I just wait till the bulbs blow till I go all dremel on'm

 

 

and I do want to see some pics of those when they're on...should be pretty freaken bright

The 194 or 168 bulb I was talking about isn't "HID" it's just tinted to look the same color temp as the HID kit.

Got them all wired up, just need to finish up the drivers side housing (clean, paint, and polish everything) and reseal it and reassemble, then I can install it and aim them properly.

Ya know I had this 83 for 10 years or so , but it has no fog lights, never thought about the right side switches do anything but look pretty.. hell even the pop up does not work on it.. hehe I am Lame...

This really tips the scale of "bad"...
