Ever had to cut u-joints to remove them?

I did. While doing the clutch on my toyota pickup I noticed the u-joints were clunky. After 21 years and 63k miles they were failing. Problem was they were internal retaining type. Meaning the retaining clip went inside the flanges not outside. http://images.oreillyauto.com/parts/img/medium/mpj/p387.jpg The retaining clips go in the grooves on the bearing cap.
