Shifter Knob Removal -HOW??

By mstieg,
I had issues with removing the shifter know when pulling the shifter for a clutch swap. I've heard something about a pin?? What's the deal?
I ended up pulling it with the boot still on ~had no other choice at the time. I'd like to avoid if I need to do it again. Maybe others would like this knowhow also.
