Starwolf
Well this was originally going to be a pm sent straight to burton after viewing his awesome guides on body work. Instead i just decided to ask where i should start...i went out and took some pictures of some of the bad places on the car. I think I would like to try and get some of the body work on my car out of the way and try and do it myself (to lower cost) Any help would be appreciated ...just trying to get started. So what tools should i get to fix some of these spots? http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/lokiguard/HPIM0588.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/lokiguard/HPIM0589.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/lokiguard/HPIM0590.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/lokiguard/HPIM0591.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/lokiguard/HPIM0592.jpg This front panel is bent a little if you can tell...i figure the person tried to get it to look normal http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/lokiguard/HPIM0593.jpg This one looks like someone might have cut that bottom? Im not sure but it doesnt look right. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/lokiguard/HPIM0594.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/lokiguard/HPIM0595.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/lokiguard/HPIM0596.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/lokiguard/HPIM0597.jpg Edited July 26, 2009 by Starwolf
Odyssey5
I've got a rust spot exactly like the one in the door trim. I'd say just sanding it completely down and just fiberglassing it. (Cloth, resin, hardener). Simple cheap and DIY. Fiberglass is great for rusted out spots cause you can just cut it to the general shape, apply, wait and sand back down til you can't tell. My entire gas tank was rusted out so I fiberglassed a whole new bottom. Works great now. Unless you want to weld and grind or pay someone to this is the easy way. Narrow87
one i would just replace that fender..
Starwolf
Yeah I am thinking about replacing both fenders and probably even the front... But for the back...how easy is that piece to take off?
craig87
i hate to say it but if you can see 1/4" of fust there is atleast 2" of bad metal. You need a big air compressor and a da sander to start to strip that uglyness on the door and front bumper. fenders shouoldnt be saved unless you an find a set. rear bumber you can save with 3m automix like burton would probably suggest. I have used jbweld quick set for bumper and airdam rebuilds work for me but not its intended purpose. as far as those damn chip guard plastics a da will do it but i used a grinder on mine. so a DA a big compressor and some jb weld will get you started but then you need a spray setup to prime. then you can buy my favortie thing in the world DURABLOCK (google it) and block sand and fill and block sand and fill and block sand the car till its actually straight. filler is the biggest waste of money you put it on and sand most of it back off if your doing it right. Starwolf
I am thinking about buying a whole new roller (with a more rare color) That way I wont have to pay for paint, front air dam, etc.. Or would it be easy enough (time is not a problem) for me to get this shell ready for paint...and would that honestly save me much money? Any ideas? Convette
To be fully honest, I would look for a clean roller. They are out there, and one with a blow motor is not hard to find. I only say this cause I've seen under your car, and that thing has been hit real hard in the front end. You will always have problems keeping an alignment, and having body panels line up. I don't want to ruin your dreams, and I'm sure your attached to your car, but if you want a clean one and want to go through painting it, start with a straight car. Swap the good parts and scrap the rest. You might not save all that much money, but in the end you will have a far better product.
FijiPhil
Yeah, i would definately say find a cleaner roller if thats an option for you.
JDOliver
That door sill is a structural member of the car. It appears to be mostly gone. Find another car or someone with good cutting and welding skills.
speed racer
after digging way in some rust repair on my car.Not to mention repair work from 2 significant wrecks by previous ovners.I'd buy a decent roller in a second.I got most of the major rust repair done.but gd what a pita.Fixing some half a** work somebody else did also sucks.I've cut and welded a lot more than I wanted.I have a mig welder and my regular dialy job is as a welder.can't get enough i suppose. The door sill area as mentioned is a structural part of car.can be repaired but..no fiberglass.seen it done. You could find a decent car to cut that section out of but good luck. And why cut a godd rooler instead of swap over all ur good parts.I been fabbin up my own pieces from 16,18 and 22 gauge sheet metal.after making a lot of "scrap" i'm starting to get pieces that fit and look like something.Too bad your not closer or I would help save a starion.Trying like hell to save mine.work all day then spend most of evening in garage.Too far into it now to quit.
