spec3+ clutch problem.

Is anyone running the spec3+ cluch? I have a swapped 4g64 with an 88 trans and a 3+ clutch. It seems like the clutch disc is hanging up. When you push the pedal the clutch drags for a few seconds when your coming to a stop then it releases and is fine. It does the same at idle when you go to put it in gear it wont go in until you push on the shifter a little and you can hear the disc spin when it releases. I had a centerforce before and had no problems. I even changed the slave cylinder and it didn't help. It seems like the disc doesn't want to release from the flywheel. the disc is pretty heavy I wonder if it isn't sticing. I'm considering going down one step to the spec3 i'm just worried that it wont hold. Thanks for any input.... P.S. It runs like an animal.

I have the SPEC 3+ for my T56 trans, it's never "stuck" or had any of the problems you have described. That doesnt' help you with the question about the starquest aplication, but I can assure you the design itself is sound.

Was the trans input shaft bone dry? it needs a fine film of greese so the disk can slide on the input shaft a little. If it's bone dry and has gotten hot a few times, it may be sticking on that shaft which would cause it to "drag" even when disengaged.

When you replaced it, did you put in a new TOB? there are 2 versions as there are 2 different transmissions. If so, you may have gotten the wrong combo. When that happens, the clutch slave can't fully disengage the disk, even with the peddal all the way to the floor.

I have to threadjack for a second, Chad, do you mean 82-87 trannies have a different TOB than 88-89 ones? Would that explain the TOB noise that mine is making now that I have an 87 trans in my car with the TOB from my 88?

somewhere on here Indy has the differences documented. If you have the wrong combo it won't make noise, it's just nearly impossible to fully disengage the clutch because the TOB is too short and won't push on the PP fingers enough. The master/slave are self adjusting, but they can't compensate this much.

I don't have any problems disengaging, but I can hear the tob spinning (at first I thought the turbo was going bad) at idle, and when I press the clutch pedal even just a tiny bit, the noise stops. I think it's what you're getting at, where the TOB isn't deep enough or something. Although, when I think about it, the length of the input shaft splines or what have you shouldn't matter one bit, unless that is what stops the TOB from moving backward.

Sounds like a bad TOB, it happens... You are hearung the bearings osscilating in their race. Probably not enough greese in the TOB bearing assembly. I drove a 90's S-10 that did the same thing.

Its intercooled Vs Non-intercooled tranny cases that determines the TOB to use. Intercooled trannys came later when they made parts stronger one was the front wall and its thicker and that just caused the pivot point to move more towards the flywheel and that change was 5mm so the slave rod length and the TOB are 5mm thinner than before. The actual slave cylinder is the same, just the rod is shorter.

Here's all the pictures

and we took this restrictor out completely, it has a different size hole in it on the Raider/Montero so its about hose quickly the fluid passes in and out of the slave cylinder

I'm running the regular spec3 and having no problems. I know that not what you wanted to hear sorry lol

  • 2 weeks later...
I pulled the trans and I found the input shaft was dry. I guess I forgot to clean it and lube it when I did the swap. It works good now. I'm taking it to the track tommorow so we'll see what it does... Thanks for the help...

Awesome, thanks for the update. All too often problems get fixed but no one else knows what the fix was so others can't learn from the experinace.
