Getting my car painted...

Recommended Posts

My car is at the shop for some bodywork and fresh paint. Here are a few pics as it's being readied for paint.

Wow, I thought your paint looked fine at Nationals.

I would suggest putting on a spare set of wheels (if you have them) and requesting that they mask off your engine bay. I got my car back from being painted a couple months ago and the overspray that got into my engine bay is ridiculous. I can see already that it's going to take me forever to clean/polish everything under the hood again. Unless the painter is really careful, overspray just gets everywhere.

I've seen show car quality outta a garage... whats your point.

I have seen some amazing things in my life as well. However, I think when I am spending my hard earned money I would do it with someone that was using the proper equipment and environment that would provide a smaller chance of foriegn objects entering the paint.

Paint booths were invented and used by virtually every professional painter for a reason. And I am guessing it is not because they had an extra 10 to 20 grand sitting around they didn't know what to do with.

its actualy extremely easy to keep objects out of the paint if you dont have a booth..

I painted a car in a DIRTY and i mean fricken DIRTY shop last winter... the trick is to lay light coats that barely cover of the color and then tach clothe it, lay another, tach clothe it..

you'll have maybe 6-7 coats on it of color instead of the usual 2-3 just because the coats are so light..

Light coats dry faster and thus putting less dirt and grime in the paint.. then tach iot and spray away!!!

when you wetsand/buff/polish all the flaws usualy come out anyway if there are any...

BTW the car i painted in that dirty a** shop i never wetsanded/buffed/polished and he just won a car show with it ;)

cant wait to see it done.

I have painted cars in dirty garages too...makes no difference if u do it somewhat like boostandmuscle said. but paint booths do have HUGE advantages dont get me wrong.

i also hope that he masks the tires and engine bay up nicely, because it WILL get in there. or atleast on a tire. I think its funny when i drive down the road and i see someone with a freshly painted car...because the tires have the same color on them =)

are those drift R wheels?

Yes, been running them for 3+ years now. I will be changing them to these after the car is out of the shop.

Thanks everyone, I'll post pics when it's done. The guy painting the car has painted numerous cars that hit the car shows around here. He takes pride in his work and goes the extra mile to make sure everything is done right. I've seen his work in the past and he was very excited to paint my car. He gave me some interesting info about a guy who visited his shop to see my car...but I'll wait and see how that pans out! :eek1bluegreen:

Both cars looked clean from the get go, makes me want to redo mine, I'm jealous. I got a friend that does show cars too, not to mention he owes me favor( rewired his hot tub ). He told me all I got to spend is some time helping and $1500. I just don't feel comfortable doing it myself without a paint boot.

Looking good guys.

I had to take it back in for final buff and to fix flaws. I should get the finished car on Friday. I will spend the weekend adding decals, installing rest of trim and hardware, cleaning interior, swapping turbos, installing new A/F and EGT gauges.

I have a friend I ride with who has taken time off from his job for a while and has picked up photography. Really great stuff. I want him to shoot my car.

  • 4 months later...

should look nice. I painted my Fiero out of my dad's garage. Sanded and prepped it in there. Then I sprayed the floor down and swept everything out. Then I built an enclosure out of 1x's and plastic. i put a few filters on one side and then a few on the other side with a fan blowing out. Before painting I washed the car and wet the floor beneath it to keep the dust to a minimum. Car looks great, but My dad failed to mention that I needed to sand with 1500-2000grit paper and buff before putting on my clear coat. I buffed the clear coat out and it has a nice shine to it, but if you look close you can see a slight bump to the paint beneath the clear coat. Can only see on really sunny day and need to really be looking for it. The car is gloss black with pontiac silver stripes going down the middle. I think it cost like $500 total for everything (already had a gun and compressor)

I don't have any pics of it after a wash, but it doesn't look too bad in these pics. (never painted the ground effects). I'd definitely paint it myself again, because it came out good as it was and now I know more. To have a single color paint job around here would have been a few thousand.
