BullShipper Posted March 15, 2002 Report Share Posted March 15, 2002 I have an AUTO 87' Starion I am pretty sure my OD isn't working, as when I push the OD button nothing happens, no matter the temp of the car. I heard somewhere that OD's use a temp sensor to turn on and sometimes the sensor breaks. Is this right? WHere is this sensor? Thanx Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
BaltTSI Posted March 16, 2002 Report Share Posted March 16, 2002 I just came on to find something related to the same problem , what I did was replaced my whole temp gauge with a Cyberdyne digital one , it required that I change the sensor , so I did , this left the factory sensor unpluged , now it won't go into 4th . ( 89 Auto ) So I'm thinking the gauge sensor is controling the trans also . it worked fine before I did this . This is the sensor thats right under the thermostat , if you have 2 there ( AC cars ) it's the one on the right , the other one comes on cars with AC , I guess it controls the 3rd fan ? mikec Posted March 17, 2002 Report Share Posted March 17, 2002 On 88-later cars, there is a temp sensor in the thermostat housing with 2 prongs: one drives your dash temp guage (yellow+blue wire), the other (yellow+green) is a hot/cold (on/off) switch that enables the O/D function. It also sends a signal to the a/c system to tell it when there is warmth in the coolant... i.e. when it's time to switch from the defrost vents to the floor heater vents when you use the AUTO mode. You've probably lost that function as well... In 87-earlier cars, the sensor is a one-wire sensor with a yellow+green wirefor the o/d function. There is a different sensor with yellow+blue wires for the dash temp guage. And under the dash is yet another temp sensor (two wire) for the a/c system. For any model year, grounding the yellow+green wire fakes the system into thinking "engine is warmed up" and the o/d is enabled. On the 88-later cars, this also switches the a/c system over to "heat" mode using the floor vents rather than blowing on the windshield. mike c.
