Now that the exhaust sits where it's supposed to, I put the fairing back on to see the spatial relationship with the two. They come mighty close to each other, so I wrapped a section with titanium exhaust wrap to help protect the fairing. It would suck to melt the thing after all the work I'm putting into it.

Here's the left fairing after a lot of sanding and work. These shots are after the first coat of primer...looking good so far. Still needs some wet sanding and a few more coats I'd imagine.

And here's some before/after shots of the right fairing...after a TON of sanding and work, and a shot of primer. This is the side the bike came down on in the wreck...and got chewed up pretty bad. It's still has some small issues, but I'm shocked I was able to get it even to this point. Some more work and I'll get it sorted out.

Here's a few pics on the primer sanding. Knocked it down with 320, shot a second coat and took some 400 to it. Starting to look and feel very nice. Base coat is up next!

Went ahead and shot first base coat on the left (undamaged) fairing tonight. Was checking two things...

  1. Wanted to make sure the paint color/mix was right. This is the same Mitsubishi Suri Blue that I had Burton paint my '86 Starion.
  2. Wanted to see what kind of coverage I could expect. I only bought a quart of it and a quart of reducer (1:1 ratio) so as not to waste money if the color wasn't right. But I think it turned out pretty well (compare it to the final product on the car below)

Shot the first base coat on the damaged fairing this morning. Waited for it to not be tacky anymore and set it out to cure in the sun (yes we finally had some sun today).

Since I'm going to let the fairings cure some more before getting on some wetsanding, I decided to go ahead working on color-matching my helmet. Sanded it down with 320 to prep the surface for paint. Then taped it off...man it's almost harder to tape off a helmet than an entire car!

Once it was all taped off, I shot it with the Suri Blue. Although I goofed and forgot to adjust the nozzle back to job mode. Left it on clean mode and the paint sprayed on way to heavy. Got runs all over the place...but it's nothing some block sanding won't take care of...it'll just take a little longer than I planned.

I think I'd mentioned that my goal was to paint the CBR in the same colors as Burton painted my '86...so here's a little color match test...my helmet (painted from the same batch as what's being painted onto the bike) sitting on the rear hatch. Pretty darn good match me thinks! Keep in mind that the helmet has not been wetsanded or clearcoated yet...so the match should only get better.

Ok i think you learned a lot now, wanna paint my car now? lol :D

By the way i think the match is coming along really nice.

Now remember the car has several coats of clear.

 Thanks Randy!

Still some work to do on that helmet. The Suri Blue paint is a slight metallic...which doesn't always have the best return when wet-sanding...so I'll have to be careful. Hoping to shoot it again in the next day or two after I get the runs knocked down. Then I'll get back on the fairings. If all goes well, I'd like to start on the rest of the bike next week...would love to start shooting clear in a few weeks.

A little light wet-sanding and I got the runs on the helmet out without issue. Then shot it with the second coat of base...coming right along!

Finally got the front mask sanded down and taped off...shot the first coat of base today. Turned out a lot better than the first basecoat on the helmet!

  • 2 weeks later...

Got the rest of the body parts off the bike this past week and shot them with an initial base coat. The work is going much faster on these since they weren't damaged in the wreck. You can see some of them in the background of the pic below...looking good so far. I decided to paint the tank while it's on the bike...didn't want to mess with the fuel system. The tank is unbolted and I put some spacers underneath it for when I shoot the base coat.

Here's some shots of the tail section and the front wheel splash guard...these parts have turned out really well with minimal work (when compared to the side fairings anyway). This is after third coat of base...now they're just waiting for the rest of the parts to be finished so I can shoot clear.

Finally got the tank sanded down today. Shot some primer and then first coat of base about three hours later. Should look pretty nice after another two coats of base.
