adrenalinegirl91
I have an 86 Chrysler conquest that likes to jump & clunk repeatedly when I down shift from 3rd to 2nd & 2nd to 1st. & also when going in reverse. I'm convinced its the differential. If anyonebfhinks differently or has one they're selling please let me know ASAP.
StarquestRescue
Sounds more like the differential mounts. Set the park brake. Have some one look under the car but clear of it in case it moves. Put it in reverse and ease the clutch out. Have the person watch if the differential raises up and smacks the bottom of the uni body. NotStock88
did you look at the diff/torque tube mounts to see if they are worn out/faulty first?
adrenalinegirl91
No I haven't checked anything yet I have the Jack that comes in the car but it looks no where trust worthy so I'm asking around to use a friends jack to look under it. Its just really rough & wasn't sure if it was something small or recognizable.

Indiana
Its the differential mount(s) not the torque tube mounts. You shouldn't do much engine braking with this car. The mounts are set up to pull apart when you do that but forward power they are just pushed down on. Someone has put the jack under the differential thinking ahh, rwd car you jack those up by the differential. Wrong, not this car you must use only the front middle and rear middle of the crossmembers. If you use frame rails to jack up the car you'll mash them. Same goes for the rear lower control arms, they will dent if you put a jack with raised points on the pad. You axle can pop out too when the mounts break loose. ucw458
Have you checked the torque tube shaft for spline damage? The torque tube is bolted to the front of the diff with 4 bolts. It transfers power from the driveshaft to the diff. It has splines where it couples to the diff and they require maintenance. But they rarely get maintained. The grease dries out ant the splines get eaten up and cause clunking. Rotate your driveshaft by hand with the parking brake on. If it moves then chances are the torque tube shaft is damaged. You either replace it with a good used one or learn to live with the noise. Either way it needs to be lubed.
adrenalinegirl91
The car isn't registered at the moment I just have a plate slapped on it for the time being but as soon as I find someone with a lift I can use I will do as all of u are saying. I appreciate the feedback & will get back to u later after I'm able to check it.
adrenalinegirl91
I also think that the spacers in the rear end are bad. and it really sounds and feels like the gears inside are skipping teeth & it mostly happens in reverse. Indiana
The axle on the side the mount is torn will pull out and yes the teeth are chewing on the end. You can push the axle back in if you didn't chew them up too bad and do not engine brake (downshift) or go in reverse quick or fast and up a hill or it will pull out again. They are easier to replace if you drop the fuel tank
