not sure but it was common pratice to run over full back in the day

you can get an idea by stoping the engine and emediately checking dip stick or checking while runing

 

most modern engine use 4.5 qt i have always ran them with 5 qt , look at it this way of a qt of oil is circulateing thru the engine and your a qt low whats left in the oil pan :),, theres no excuse for runing an engine hard with it being low on oil

Its well below the add mark when cold. I checked this once, It may return to the pan a little faster once the oil gets hot, but i still want to think there is at least as quart somewhere else other than the pan at all times.
