movin on
I have a modded valve body from balt that is from an 87. I was wondering if I can put that in my 88-89 transmission? I finally picked up a different transmission and figured I would swap the valve bodies if I can before I install the transmission and make it more of a pain to do after the installation. Balt said he couldn't remember. The 87 blew the front main seal and was in good shape from the beginning. There was still some fluid in the transmission after seal went and the valve body still had a bit in it.
BaltTSI
I can't believe no one can answer this question, including me But try doing a search, I know this has come up before, the answer is in here somewhere. Rob
The Rabbit1
I can't remember when they added O/D. if the 87 had O/D then you should be good to go.
movin on
My car did have O/D before, so I am going to give it a shot. Now I just need to find my old pics from balt of the vb.
The Rabbit1
that is the only difference between the two, the O/d section, the convertor, and the flexplate. assuming the V/B controls all in a auto trans I would assume the two would be different. I knew it was either 87 or 88 when they added O/D. You'll be good to go.
BaltTSI
Hey Movin, what did you need the pictures for? how to bolt it back in? I shouldstill have those
movin on
I found them sir. You sent me 3 pics of what to remove them, such as the bolts. Just got done doing a sketch of them in a notebook, so I can remove them.
movin on
I was removing my modded vb and saw that the person who installed this transmission must have took the valve body out and since all the bolts were loose. I figured I would open it up and clean everything since it was a little dirty and I found this and was wondering if anybody knows where this spring came from and where it suppose to go? It was stuck where it is in the first pic. It appears to have been about 1/2 inch long before it got messed up. Maybe a tiny bit longer. Lol, or was this spring dropped in there? Maybe from pen. http://c.imagehost.org/t/0963/valve_body_spring.jpg http://a.imagehost.org/t/0709/valve_body_spring_2.jpg http://c.imagehost.org/t/0251/valve_body_spring_3.jpg Edited January 18, 2011 by movin on
movin on
I believe I have found what the spring is from by taking apart another vb I have. It slides into a metal cup shaped piece with a small hole in the end. I also had another spring come out of this one that didn't come out of the other one. It is one inch long and much firmer than the other one. If anybody can help me identify, or simply give me directions as where these "floating" pieces go in between the two parts of the vb. http://c.imagehost.org/t/0867/Spring_part.jpg http://c.imagehost.org/t/0949/new_spring.jpg
BaltTSI
Oh hell, you did it now! I tell everyone I have built one for not to take the VB apart unless you know what your doing, small parts go everywhere!if no one else can help I'll have to get my diagrams out, it's been a while since I have worked on one, I'll try when I get home today. movin on
The one with the damaged spring had been taken apart already and I took the other one apart (taken apart, I mean just separating the halves). Only the two springs with the one retainer came out of the undamaged vb and I only found the small spring in the modded one. I left everything else in place. I was looking in starquestgarage, but it isn't much help. The diagram isn't the best. Maybe I will look into it a little more. movin on
So far everything is going smoothly and the vb is assembled with baltsi's help. The only difference I see is a marking that is under the filter on the vb. The 87 vb has #2A M4R on the top right corner and the 88 has #2B M4R http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i368/movinon35/th_vbmarkings.jpg
Indiana
This transmission came out in the 70s. We got OD in 84 The valve body changed in 88 The valvebody you took out might have had more parts in it than it needed, they changed that. Here's some parts for you to slobber overhttp://www.bmsproducts.com.au/catalogue.htm http://www.b2600turbo.com/images/TSBvb01.jpghttp://www.b2600turbo.com/images/TSBvb02.jpghttp://www.b2600turbo.com/images/TSBvb03.jpghttp://www.b2600turbo.com/images/TSBvb04.jpghttp://www.b2600turbo.com/images/TSBvb05.jpghttp://www.b2600turbo.com/images/TSBvb06.jpg
BaltTSI
Yep! I have seen so many different orifice configurations in these VBs when I was modifying them
movin on
Just wanted to let everyone know that the modded 87 vb in a 89 trans is working great. I sounded like a mad scientist when I was laughing while chirping my tires when the car shifted from first to second gear at 40 mph. It is kind of scarey because I can do it at 5psi, lol. BaltTSI
Yep, I had a hard time convincing some on here that mine would actually chirp the tires even going from 2nd to 3rd! I wrote manual trannys off after experiencing this many years ago making Mopar 727 autos shift like this for my old muscle cars
movin on
I would believe it. What stage vb were you running when you chirped the tires between 2nd and 3rd? I have a stage 2 and that was at 5 psi with a tdo5h 18g. It will be interesting when I run 15-18psi. I will probably leave black marks on the road everywhere I go. BaltTSI
Stage 3, but that was way to radical to live with day to day, I rebuilt it a little milder after that.
