I've been tinkering around with this car a little when I wasn't super busy, but not enough to really post any updates until now. We have a big TX Kia meet this weekend. My wife and I are presidents of the TX chapter of United Kia Enthusiasts and my biz is a sponsor of the meet, so I've had to make sure to get all my little projects for this car finished. I've got a tent and will have this car as well as a couple of friend's Kias and maybe even my Starion parked there, so everything has to be up to snuff and looking awesome.

Built a sub box and got it in primer...

Then I also got the rear lip spoiler finished and in primer...

I had kinda put the upper rear window spoiler on the back burner, because kate wasn't sure if she wanted it on there or not, but last week I decided to go ahead and dig it out and finish it. I figure if she likes it once it's done and on there, great, but if not and people at the meet like it, then I can make a mold of it and sell them, which I plan to do with the deck lid spoiler too.

I got that spoiler in it's first coat of primer tonight, and will probably be able to do a final prime tomorrow- Sorry, no pics of that yet. The deck lid spoiler got it's final prime tonight, as well as the sub box. Both spoilers and the sub box will be painted and installed by the end of the week.

More to come then...

Are you going to be making the spoilers and selling them to the kia fellas? I hope so...It looks good...would be good stuff for you.

That's the plan. I'm gonna put the spoilers on Kate's car for a couple months, to make sure the fiberglass cures all the way and settles into it's final shape, then I can go and smooth them out again, gelcoat them, and use them as plugs to make molds.

The spoiler selection offered for this car is pretty lame. There's 2 or 3 different lip spoilers and 1 or 2 upper rear window spoilers available, but they are all pretty simple and not very aggressive looking. The only aggressive looking spoiler for these cars is a big wing spoiler that sells for about $400. The rest of the spoilers go for about $200-$300 each, so I'm hoping to sell mine for about $300 painted to match. I may also try and come up with some body kit pieces.

It's kinda crazy... For being cheap cars owned mostly by young kids, the owners of these things aren't afraid to spend money. It's deffinately worth the time to create some products.

Hell, I already have one guy trying to buy my sub box off me for $500 without the sub or amp. If he still wants it after the meet this weekend, then I can forsee myself building a new box for Kate's car soon LOL.

I'll get pics of the stuff installed this weekend.

While making these I've kinda come up with how I'd make an upper hatch spoiler for SQ's in my head, so there may be something coming in the future :)

Well, the meet was a good time, and everyone was really digging the spoilers and sub box. I had to work my tail off the past few days to get everything done, but it was worth it because the cars looked great.....

Mark, that hatch spoiler looks sexy. Did I read further up you may look into something similar for a SQ? I'd be down for one. B)

That sub box looks really cool man. As does the rest of the Kia, and the Starion.

And the Kia rockin the Student Driver sticker. B)

Yep, I'm gonna do a SQ one. I've thought about some of the other things that people are interested in, but most of the parts that people want made just cost so much in R&D with just a few parts made that they become cost prohibitable. The idea I have for the SQ upper hatch spoiler would be fairly simple to prototype and mold so I think they could be sold at a price that would not only cover the R&D, but be priced low enough that even some of the cheaper SQers can afford.

I plan to have it mimic the OEM lower hatch spoiler in both shape and rake. It will also cover up the ugly hatch hinges.

Nah, I'm done doing GP's. The last one took a month longer than I expected, and I hate holding onto people's money. Plus, I want to be able to just work thru the project at my own leisure and not be rushed to get product- The mold will be better and turn out a cleaner part that way. I'll make the prototype and mold later this summer, and if the mold produces good parts that I feel comfortable puting my name on then I'll start selling them one at a time.

Sounds good to me. I look foreward to seeing one of these on the Quest. Back to the Kia.

Thanks for the props! I do plan to mold the trunk spoiler in and also eliminate the KIA badge on the trunk. But, I want to be able to sell the lip spoilers to other people who just want something they can stick on. After I get the mold done and can start producing the parts, I'll take one of those spoilers and mold it in on our Koup so it looks a little cleaner. The main point of making these was so I could make molds to duplicate and sell the parts.

Here's a few more pics. We did a little photo shoot this past weekend...

Sadly, we had to say good-bye to the ol' Koup this week. The low two seater thing wasn't working out too well for my pregnant wife, so we traded up to a Sorento. It's a more comfortable ride, is easier to get in and out of, and will have plenty of room for baby.

So long, Koup. You were a great car and I hope you find a home where you are treated as well as you were here.

Not sure if I'll be doing much modding to the Sorento, other than some tint, and some mesh grille inserts that I will be producing to sell.
