miamipops
Body work needs to be done and how do I begin with this? Previous owner has tried a little body work that does not look good at all. Do I bang on it with the hammer and dolly? Then bondo over all of it? I do not have the tools or talent to cut panel out and replace. Not much experience with body work. The work you guys have posted here looks awesome! I know you all can give me good advice on this project.Thanks,Petehttp://i892.photobucket.com/albums/ac126/miamipops/rearquarter006.jpghttp://i892.photobucket.com/albums/ac126/miamipops/rearquarter005.jpghttp://i892.photobucket.com/albums/ac126/miamipops/rearquarter003.jpghttp://i892.photobucket.com/albums/ac126/miamipops/rearquarter002.jpg
BC_99
If you want it right, pay someone to replace the entire 1/4 panel. You can just pack it full of bondo, but that much mud is likely to just crack and bust loose before to long. BC_99

Burton
Online Body Manual Try that. The list and links to the 21 chapters is down at the bottom of the first post. Everything from what tool sets you might need, to assessing what the car needs, all the way up to metalworking, body repair, paint, and even detailing for when you're done. Obviously, the best thing to do would be to replace the whole 1/4 panel, but if you don't have a welder and resources for major panel replacing/patching, you could likely bang/pull that panel out a little bit better and mud it up, still staying within a reasonable thickness of body filler. Starting out with a sturdier fiberglass filler to take up most your depth and finishing off with a thin coat of plastic filler will be a long lasting repair, and with good finish sanding would likely be un-noticeable. It's not the "right" way to do it, but if you don't have the money and/or resources to do it right, there are ways to make things look a LOT nicer on a very limited budget. For the record, if it were me, I would do it the right way. Even tho I know what I can get away with, there's always a risk in cutting corners or not doing things "right" so it's just easier for me to do things the right way every time, and not have to worry about problems down the road. Of course, having pretty much all the body repair resources/tools I need, and a college degree at my disposal make doing it the right way every time pretty easy. cyberquest
i agree, i cut a couple corners on one place on mine an its almost a complete rust hole again so it was pretty wasted effort. now i have to refix it the right way. like burton said if you have a welder replacement is a good idea. if not your kinda on the right track with the hammer and dolly. just hammer the metal back into shape as best you can so that you have to use as little body filler as possible. i always miss HIGH spots in the metal, low spots you missed are ok cause the bodyfiller will fill them in, but a high spot sticks OUT like a sore thumb. and the only way to get it right it to hammer it down, so you want your repair area to be very slightly concave. those holes he has filled in is where hes drilled to attach a screw for a older style dent puller or just gave it someplace to pull them out by hand. you may be able to take out the interior panels and be able to get to the inside of some of the panels from the inside but this car is packed pretty tight. pure_insanity
that quarter is mucked up. whoever tried beating it out has made it much worse than it was before he got ahold of it. like burton said, that needs to be replaced but it can be worked and filled. if its done right you will never know anything was done. DO NOT attempt to hammer this out yourself. that quarter has major problems and needs the attn of a seriously good bodyman. ive been doing bodywork for about 15 or so years, and that one is one that i might would seek help for. if nothing else just a second opinion. you need an older bodyman, maybe even an old lead man if you can find one. they did alot more straightening metal back then than we do nowadays. mostly its straighten a little and replace a lot in modern times. miamipops
I assumed you guys were going to suggest panel replacement. The panel will be hammered and dollied and we will hope for the best. I have seen the work Cyberquest and Burton can do and I respect your suggestion guys. But panel replacement right now is not gonna happen. You two guys do EXCELLENT work and thanks again for taking thetime to reply. I will read your suggestion Burton, completely. This is the reason we bought this car, to work on it together. it is not a daily driver. My son and I have learnedalot and enjoyed hours together working on it. Our Starion is probably never going to be as nice as any of the ones on this site. But the time we spend working on it - is as the saying goes "priceless".Thanks to all you guys for the replies!
