Turbo Swap Question in 4x4 montero

I have a new 16g turbo I could put on my 87 montero, (By the way its a 87 starion motor) My question is Should I just rebuild the stock one or swap them out?

I went 4wheeln this weekend and really liked the low end torque and the stock turbo spooled nicely:) Will I loose that if

I swap in the bigger turbo? The one I have now May have a leeky oil seal and it smokes when im warming it up in the morning

then goes away when its warmed up. If some one here has a good one I could rebuild I may be interested.

Thanks for your input.

For offroading you should stick with the stock turbo at stock boost otherwise it is gunna lag then when the boost hits either gunna a) spin the tires or B) break something in the drive line.

You can either rebuild yourself if you feel confident or send it to someone. You can find rebuild kits online for a mits td05 turbo

I say bolt it on and try it. Is yoor truck 5speed or auto? I always regretted never getting around to putting a 14 g on my truck.

Its an 4 speed Auto, I looked up the turbo I have and its a "Big 16g" So I have to do a little fab work but nothing big to bolt it on.The turbo is brand new and came with a nice mandrel 2.5 down pipe which is perfict because thats what I have turbo back.

I just want gobbs of low end because thats were I need it. In 4wheel low this thing pulls like crazy.

I am very impressed with the starion performance and its a night & day difference and hauls tail with 33's

The auto's are good for turbo torque. Yes the 14g would be a better choice if you want a little more. Is the big 16g a dsm turbo? They take a lot of work to fit up. There are 16g's that are 100% bolt on.

Ask these guys http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB69 They love the turbo automatic combo.

So the stock turbo that with the starion motor is a 14g? And yes the 16g turbo is a JDM. They say just remove the rear stud and it bolts up lines and all.

The link you sent me is where I got all my info for the motor swap them guys are awsome.

Stock starion turbo is 12a tdo5. A dsm turbo needs the down pipe reworked, and some other mods, which is ok, on less you want to swap back and forth. Dsm turbo are cheaper. Dsm stock 1g cars was 14b tdo5h on 5speed. 13g tdo4 on an auto. Indiana is the expert on the dsm turbo conversion.

Careful with high rpms and your truck on a steep hill or pull, you'll not want the pickup tube sucking in air when doing that. It sucks oil from the front of the pan. Great if you want to race down a hill lol.

Isint a rear sump pick up conversion mandatory on the montero swap do to the cross member location being different fom the 4x4 trucks? How did you do your oil pick up?

I used the stock starion oil pump because it is better then made a custom pick up tube for the front sump montero pan works realy good.

So my stock turbo should be the 14g because it came out of a starion A/T?

So indiana Would the 16g be worth the swap? I tried to PM ya but your inbox is full:)

Also The turbo housing says "Sport JDM TD05

Ok I got ya, well the price was right for the JDM turbo:), and it seems to be built pretty good.

I just want a good combo for what I do. Im not racing it just 4wheelin slow craw style and a few blast arounds in the desert.

If sticking with the stock turbo and just rebuild it ill do it, Or sell the 16G or trade for a

14g if thats better for me. Im open to suggestions. I will say im a little confused when my Jdm turbo says

Td05 and its a 16g, And a stock starion is a td05 as well. Whats thats all about?

Im also fabing up a wrx style intercooler with a wrx imperza hood scoop

looks really cool ill have pics up soon.

There isn't any reason why there isn't a TD05-16G and if there is then great just use that compressor housing and cartridge in your stock turbine housing. All you'll need to do is make a bracket to hold your WG actuator.

Remove the compressor housing and reposition it where you'd like your intercooler plumbing to go and to use existing holes in the housing to make the actuator better work for you.

It won't matter these days if a turbo is made in China or not you won't know the difference. They may even be better who knows. and there are mistakes made by everyone including Mitsubishi.

I'd not pay the money for a turbo to be Mitsubishi made if someone else gave it to me to spend. China isn't stupid why make these inferior turbos and expect people to keep buying them for years and nobody find out different? Its the morons that put them on that don't know anything about turbos that have them fail then blame China.

Japan and Germany were bombed to heck and had to build new modern factories and that's where the best cars came from.

China wants money, their population wants "stuff" of all kind including cars and while they may make some crap they have the ability to make high quality "stuff" same as anyone.

There are plenty of knockoffs off cheap crap like BOVs and gauges and STRUTS but if you go to the trouble to make a turbo you spent some money and you didn't do it so it can fail and you loose your customers. Those common lower priced items you can sell to plenty of suckers like BOVs, gauges and STRUTS you can get by with selling cheap crap for a very long time.

And thats what I thought the turbo has nice castings and seems to be built good. I have everything to put this turbo on. Custom down pipe and

all. The only thing I have to make it the jpipe which I already have the ubend and 2bolt flange for that. these to turbos even though there both TD05

the impellers are alot bigger in the new turbo as well as the inlet side. I will agree with you on the "China" products I deal with them every day in the computer industry. So do you think I should just go with the new turbo and be done with it? My rig has low gears and the engine revs pretty quickly off the line. Should I notice a big diffrence as well?

The tdo5 and tdo5h is the turbine (hot) side size. 12a, 14g, 16g ect is the compressor side size. So if the i6 g has the tdo5 turbine it will fit the starion housing.

Oh and you said it was a 87 engine, is it an 87 ecu? From a non inter cooled car or an intercooled car? Do you have an intercooler on the truck now? A non intercooled ecu should probably be up graded. What boost were you running?

I've asked some of those sellers before that say TD05 in one place and TD05H in another and they are not the same, who knows what is on the housing you can just measure it to be safe or compare it to what you have already.

The J pipe, saw the tube off the flange, reposition it and weld it back on is what we do.

87 starion engine, And I upgraded the Ecu to the intercooled version. My intercooler is still in the works to getting it under the hood, But All the support brackets are done just need to cut the hole and mount up the scoop and I/C. Not sure on boost tell I install a gauge But I did install a granger Valve that I made its turned down pretty low. As for the Turbo it has a stamp on it "TD05" So that would be cool if it will just bolt up.

What is the Diameter of the TD05 Exhaust wheel? And I will check tonight.

There are a couple of topics in the Engine Swap forum about Montero swaps.

So the new turbo is in, I had to bore out the stock hot side but was no problem, on the first test run I did notice a little loss in lowend but seems good after 1500 rpm. The front bearing was toasted as you can see.
