4G63 + W58

I figured I might as well start this thread and go from there. I should have started this the other week.

I got lucky 2wks ago, I went to look at a 91 Laser from Craigslist. Thought it was just a plain jane 4g63 Laser. It turned out to be a turbo Laser. Owner couldn't get it to start. He had the whole steering column area taken apart and the ignition switch out.

For $250

Earlier this month I picked up one of Bill's W58 to 4G63 narrow bellhousings from a member on Project Zero G for $100.

I allready had a MK3 Supra W58 from a while back just sitting in the garage.

Fast forward a couple days,

My little brother and myself take out the dash etc to get the dash out and everything to get the ECU and harness out.

Then proceed with getting the transmission out.

Well today my father I and loaded up the Laser on a trailer and took the car to the scrap yard. I paid $250 for the car and got $140 and some change back for it. I picked up another engine stand from my grandfathers for the G54B block to go on. So I need to pick up some bolts today for the engine stand from Ace Hardware. Then put the Conquest on wheels dollys and get it's block out. I am hoping to do that this week. Edited by Jsmitty

I am hoping the internals are in decent shape. I am going to open it and see what the crank, main, rod, and pistons look like.

If bad , I will rebuild but if it looks good I will do new gaskets throughout and water pump, etc, etc.

I know the exhaust manifold is cracked and not sure what shape the little 13g is in. The ECU is an automatic/ Eprom, so I could get it socketed, and look forward to using speed density with Jackal on dsmap.

4g looks like a simple route. but as DJ proves its pretty wicked in the car.

im stuck in the flywheel lingo transition stage on my swap. Cant get ahold of anyone, or the people that make the flywheels dont anymore or they died or somthing.

3sgte mod is starting to look good.

Well tomorrow my dad and brother were supposed to go to Tennessee to look at a Volvo 850 T5R. But someone put a deposit down. This is the third one my little brother has missed out on. The first was up by Chicago, the second near Kansas City.

So onto my car got the engine G54B out without too much trouble.

Well tonight I started on the G54B so I can get some money out of it, or 4G63 parts.

The engine was built extremely well, in Berkley, MO, the previous owner put quite a bit of money into this car. It was built back in 01 and everything was in pretty decent shape.

The cylinder walls didn't have any cross hatching and were glass smooth, so they would have needed to be honed. The pistons were JE .40 overbore on stock prepped rods with arp rod bolts. The pistons had carbon on the crown and very little side loading wear. The block has arp main studs as well. On the main and rod bearings they were showing alittle wear. So overall the engine wasn't in bad shape but was due for a refresh.

  • 1 month later...
At this point I received bad news about my hours being drastically cut, I was paying twice the price I would normally pay for health care for Cobra. (What a waste that turned out to be) I couldn't find a job and stuck to trying to do odd jobs on the side. I had sold the ecu, harness, and W58 bill housing to gather some money. Edited by Jsmitty

All right during that time I was pretty bummed at how things were going, I was struggling for money. I had to have my father pay my bills, in which he was not to happy about. Still doing odd jobs on the side to help in some way. I was pretty set on selling the car then.

Had I still had a full time job the swap would have been completed.

Now a year later the car sat and incurred more rust, quite a bit to be exact. So now I am just getting back into the position where I should be starting a new job soon and going back to school. Still have the W58 and 4g63 block/head, so now I have to start over and realistically won't be finding deals like I did previously. This past week I have been stripping the car down to start focusing on the rust issues. I got the automatic transmission out, and drilled out brackets in the engine bay. It looks like hell with all holes but they will get welded up and smoothed. Extensive rust happening in both rear quarters, rocker panels and floor.

Here are some pics of the rust, there is more but just to give you an idea. Yes it is all fixable. About a 8 inch pile of dirt and rust fell out of the passenger quarter.

That's pretty rough. I've got one spot where moisture got behind the spray liner in the drivers wheel well and a few inches under the drivers side seat. You may want to poke around with a screwdriver in the wheel well.

Went to the dealer today to get MD041030 mount, was talking to a guy from the service department. He was telling me about a 84 Starion he might get. Then proceeded to show me his 93 Eclipse which suffered a timing belt failure sitting behind the service department. Kind of brought back memories of my janky first car which was 93 Plymouth Laser 1.8 auto and a bullet hole in the dash.

Thanks JD,

I got a little maybe pinky size near my steering column. I have a feeling I'm going to pull my carpet out. It's been least 3 years since I did that when changing back to its original black and tan interior.

G54B passenger(left), G54B Driver(middle), Mighty Max (right)

So the Mighty Max one is shorter.

So which ones you using? I'm doing the same swap, and havent bought mounts yet.

I'm going to go with 2 x MD041030 Mighty Max mounts. Which were $26.89 each from the dealer.

I still have to finish up gathering all the clutch pedal related parts and get my shifter bushings, gasket, and lower boot from Toyota. A lot of people on Supramania recommend getting the solid bushings from Marlin Crawler.

I used the Mighty Max mounts, they were under $30 for the pair from local dealer.
