Indiana
Did you look at the crank pulley? Does it wobble?
JoeyLeet2
Okay so we found out the problem and I figure I should tell you all what it was since you tried to help. Imagine our faces when we remove the timing cover and see this! http://i56.tinypic.com/24deyo0.jpg Okay so it might not be hard to tell. but the bolt was broken off! of that upper chain guide. The threads were stuck in the block and the collared bolt was just sitting in the chain guide. Anyone see crap like this before??
Indiana
Yes and its because that bolt, someone didn't put the lock washer in the proper location and it was against the bolt head and then it locks the guide from being able to pivot and it causes the bolt to loosen and it screws out until it is snapped off. The washer is to go against the block side on top of the timing chain guide and its to lock the bolt from coming out but the guide will still pivot because the collar sticks out just a little bit past the guide. http://www.b2600turbo.com/images/IM000234.JPGhttp://www.b2600turbo.com/images/IM000236.JPG http://www.b2600turbo.com/images/IM000259.JPG http://www.b2600turbo.com/TSBs/26%20pump%20chain1.jpghttp://www.b2600turbo.com/TSBs/26%20pump%20chain2.jpghttp://www.b2600turbo.com/TSBs/26%20pump%20chain4.jpg
JoeyLeet2
stupid question maybe, but would a balance shaft elim kit fix this problem? are there any kits that re route the chain away from that broken guide, would love to avoid pulling the motor
Shelby
stupid question maybe, but would a balance shaft elim kit fix this problem? are there any kits that re route the chain away from that broken guide, would love to avoid pulling the motor deff go the bal shaft elim kit direction odds are the bal shaft brgs are damage'd any wayand the engine would not need to be pull'd for any of this,, now the rad , will need to be remove'd
JoeyLeet2
well i took the radiator out and fixed that broken bolt with a helicoil, but that broke again after a 3 mile test drive cause its so cheap. but it was still a tight fit to get a drill in there. so would a BSEK fix this problem? because thats a heck of a lot cheaper than a new block. psu_Crash
Don't bother with that bolt and guide anymore. Get the broken bolt out and install a BSE kit befor you run it again! Then hopefully it will be fine

Indiana
Look at the gear on the end of your balance shaft and the one on the oil pump. The gears are the same but one goes on one direction and the other is opposite. If not positioned correctly the chain will not run in the guides and will jump. For that guide to have fallen down that far, wasn't the lower bolt missing from it too?
JoeyLeet2
No, but the lower bolt wasn't exactly tight. the chain guide was basically hanging down and resting/bouncing off the chain, and using the loose lower bolt as a pivot point
Shelby
the vibration is the bal shafts being out of time, due to the loose chain from the guide not being in place when doing a bal shaft elim,,both bal shafts are remove'd so there is nothing on the frt to get into time other then the cam chain,,DO NOT forget to install the cam brg in the kit into the upper shaft hole , and follow the instructions to the letter,, there are a number of threads detailing how to install an elim kit
JoeyLeet2
Thank you Shelby and Indiana. Sounds stupid but I lost my job because I couldn't get there when the Quest broke. Gonna see if my family wants to buy me the BSE for a holidays present if I need too lol. Hopefully I will be able to do the BSE at some point, and if I do, I will let you all know how the engine is. I'm hoping all will be well, anybody have input? Shelby
well if the car is gona be down for any length of time,, put the oil pan and frt cover loosely back in place,, only a couple bolt's need'd on the oil pan just to keep out dirt and varmits
JoeyLeet2
Ended up having to sell that Quest due to bills piling up and my mom declaring it junk. I think I sold it off for $250, with a huge list of new parts. Now, four years later, with a much better head on my shoulders, I bought a '88 Starion with 75k miles on it. Cant stay away from these cars!
