Killtodie
Its coming from so far only the second spark plug from the front, I took out the connection and soaked a paper towel with some of the grud, looks to be oil. its black and smells like it... what does this mean? bad gasket? this engine was "rebuilt" before I bought the car. Indiana
A valve cover gasket leaking or someone filled the oil and some spilled. Just wipe it off. No other way for oil to be there.
Killtodie
I hope its just something spilled. I will blast that one out with water Sunday, its dark now, and run it again.
Tim_C.
I would check the VC bolts and make sure they are not loose. It doesn't require much torque, but usually a little more torque will slow the leak down or stop it completely. It can't hurt (unless you tighten way too far). The worst thing is you need to replace the VC gasket. I think it is $7 at Auto Zone.
Killtodie
Where are those valve cover bolts, the only thing I see on the valve head are like bolts that hold lines. Is it the two, one is by the oil lid and another way back http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5937/29128555.jpg

Killtodie
yes sir. Me being a Mopar V8 man...I was baffled by the center bolts too...lol Yeah, I was thinking like at least 4 or 6... K, i'll look up their correct torque rating and try it out before I take off for the 4th. we'll go from there, thanks
Shelby
tourqe is 4lbs so just snug is good,, odds are there a problem with the gasket arround #1 plug area ,, also make doubly sure the pcv valve is the right one also a spray down with brake parts cleaner is a better idea then water ,, you won't need to blow dry Edited July 4, 2009 by Shelby
Killtodie
I took a look at it. Turned the nut almost twice around before the torque wrench got a reading, took it to about 8lb. But thats just the valve cover, if there is oil leaking from the spark plug hole than its the valve head gasket, not the cover I'll retourque all the plugs as well Edited July 5, 2009 by Killtodie
Killtodie
here is what I got does this look like a leaky head? http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/9054/img5396f.jpg http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6453/img5397k.jpg http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/3260/img5398j.jpg btw, when i was at pepboys they said something about gaskets for the plugs themselfs, I saw nothing like this when I took mine out other than a washer. is there supposed to be a rubber gasket or something like that? so I retightened the rocker cover, plugs and cleaned out any remaining oil. I\'ll run the engine and see if any new leaks form... okay, so here is an update. There is oil slowly bubbling out of the plugs, this would explain why after a 600+ drive home the car had just over a quart left in it. video: Called pepboys back, there is supposed to be some sort of "optional" gasket, all special order, takes a few days Okay, last update. Went to pepboys, there is no other plug gasket other than the crush washer that new plugs come with. so I bought new NKG BPR6ES-11plugs and a new rocker cover gasket. I will replace both later tomorrow after work. happen to have last one in stock. Looks like the previous owner who did a "rebuilt" didnt replace the plugs cause they are old and its leaking cause of the crush washer is one time use. hopefully that is the only cause here. Besides that, replacing the rocker cove gasket, as simple as it sounds? two bolts, scrape off the old, sand some, new one, tighten back up? Edde
Properly installed plugs with the washers should not leak at all. Doesn't matter if they're used 1 or 10 times. Some plugs are built without washers. Those get tightened differently (less). Just make sure both surfaces for the VC gasket are clean and oil free. I use a thin layer of black RTV on one surface (gasket) before putting it down. Pay particular attention to the curve in the back and the half round plug in front making sure they get a good clean film. Don't use too much RTV though because it will squeeze out underneath the VC and can get into the oil system. Just a nice thin layer, less than a bead even. And never try and use a torque wrench on a real low torque bolt. It is a recipe for stripped threads. As shelby says just snug... you learn to feel it. I've been able to reuse the same VC gasket many times with the RTV. Even when it gets fairly hardened.
Killtodie
I dont know then. The current washer on the plugs was all flat and crushed compared the new rounded one. So, to remove the head cover, just 2 bolts, pry it off, prep the surface. apply rtv, (to both sides?) gasket, grommets and retighten?
Killtodie
k, so new plugs. no leaks. runs fine. I might still replace the VC gasket later on but no need at this time
Edde
Good! Maybe plugs tightened enough times will get wasted...
