RWDAddict
UPDATE!I'll be partially scrapping this project for a all out 89' build up. I'm working with at least two sources to get an 89'. Just need to run the VIN's, get more pics, and then choose from there. Funds are coming my way here at the end if Q1 09'. Since I want this car restored, tuned, and plated before the nationals i'll need to find a shop to do all the work and in a hurry. The engine will be ringed and built as a long block over at Dad's but the body, engine dyno, install, and paint I will need to find a reputable show quality shop. Luckily I have Volo at my footstep. They own the worlds largest indoor auto museum and restore cars all the time. I'll start their and get some references if not even have them do the work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I'll find pics to put up here soon. This car has been a project of mine for the past three years or so. I'm sure as most of you know Sully has been doing the build up as I only know how to tinker around and not do major work like this on cars. This build sheet will not be my final build. I plan on eventually having the car made into a show car. We're talking a bolt and nut restore with as much powercoating and chrome I can throw at it, along with top grain leather, misc carbon fibre parts, chrome dipped SHP wheels, and going to try to add 1" or 2" to the rear rims for a fatter tire than the traditional 9" can hold. The sound system will be as low profile as I can make it but with still being able to pump some tunes. Now this engine is not exactly a temp but it's just to get me started. Over the next couple of years I plan on buying a clean low mileage block. From there i'm going to have it cleaned, bored .040 over, forged weisco's, TEP's forged rods, polish-lighten-knife edge the crank, ARP's all around, O-Ring the block, and the head will be the one I currently have listed below. With all the parts in hand they will all be cryo'd and then taken to Polydyn for a coating ( <a href="http://www.polydyn.com/performance_coatings.htm" target="_blank">http://www.polydyn.com/performance_coatings.htm</a> ). From there I will find a top end Chicago area shop with an engine dyno to assemble the engine, get her a solid at the crank tune, and re-install said engine into the engine bay for a at the wheel top off tune. The goal of the car is to run as much safe boost with E85. I won't be hard core racing it as I do not want to jazz up the body but I will try to make a mix of rally events, drag events, and own the streets.......safely. I just want to be able to destroy most everything on the streets up to 80mph. I'm not a fan of going any faster than that. You shouldn't have much more to prove than beating them from the line to 80. The streets are too dangerous for higher speed races. Well now that you know my plans here is what I have so far. http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa239/RWDaddict/Image001.jpghttp://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa239/RWDaddict/Image002.jpghttp://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa239/RWDaddict/Image003.jpghttp://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa239/RWDaddict/Image004.jpg Edited April 4, 2011 by RWDAddict
silverarrow89
Sick stuff, can't wait to see pics. I'm in the same boat...my list is less complete as I've only had the car for 5 months, but the estimate is dead on where yours is without the MPI. My other car of choice to buy/build up was a 944 turbo and after looking at those for average $10k ea., I went the Starion direction. Wooops...welcome to "pay as you go". All worth it in the end, as our cars are too unique to let them go to waste.

I havn't fully priced out the cryo, polydyn, and transmission work. I can expect to add another 5-10k. I would expect this project over the life I keep it to cost me over 30k. I plan to make it something to pass down the generations. Hope I can build her well enough to last 100+ years. In 09' it'll have 23 years down just 77 more to go :eek1bluegreen: Edited December 30, 2008 by RWDAddict

Starwolf
Very Very nice list!! Two things though.. Where do you get an oil pump for $38?? And www.dxd...whatever it was clutches...are those good clutches? They are way cheaper than the ACT clutches with the same torque capacity. And www.dxd...whatever it was clutches...are those good clutches? They are way cheaper than the ACT clutches with the same torque capacity. It will hold 390 ft lbs. By the time I get up to that number it will be time for a new transmission. So I went with this. They are a little underrated though. RWDAddict
You know i thought so, lol. Wasn't possitive though. Do you have pics of the new one....rather when you get back could you snap a couple of shots?
Dad
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l279/ntsullivan/RWDAddict/100_0597.jpg Very Impressive list- I see you are running a NA oil pick up and I assume a NA oil pump-?? I was under the impression that the Turbo oil pump with pick up is a higher volume pump than a NA pump. Did someone forget to install the piston oilers? EDIT--- ( Machine shop I took it too forgot the oil squirters. Thank god Sully caught that one) My bad- missed that first time. Dad
Titanium valves? but no copper alloy seats? Here is some info http://www.babcox.com/editorial/ar/eb120728.htm Titanium valves are fine for drag motor but can't hold up to daily driving. Quote from article-- One of the drawbacks of using titanium valves is that titanium does not conduct heat as well as steel. Consequently, the valve seats should have good thermal conductivity to pull heat away from the valves. If the exhaust valves get too hot, they can cause preignition and detonation that can destroy an engine Really nice build you are doing- just don't want to see you have trouble. tsiconquest88
And yes the NA pump is less pressure than the SQ pumps.
Komeuppance
83 SQ's used the rear pickup tube. Pressure is the same as the later pumps, checked with an aftermarket gauge. Volume... not sure, haven't flowed the two different oil pumps. Anyway, sweet build man... 86 FTMFW. -Robert
RWDAddict
Well this shop did forget the oil squirters and they supplied the pump. Must has picked up the NA pump, dumba**es. Something to fix now i guess before i start her up. As for the head BrianPaul built it. I'm not sure what seats he used.
tsiconquest88
komeuppance, i dont think anyone said anything about 83-89 having different pressures for the oil pumps, but the NA and turbo pumps were different flows.

RWDAddict
Update, the Eagle has landed; i repeat, the Eagle has landed!!! lol Anyways, yes the Starion is back in my driveway after its extended stay at Sully's Performance Shop ( ). New plans have surfaced for the beast. As you can see above it's a pretty solid build but there are a few upgrades and things to do before I get her running again. First we're going to start off with what she needs. 1. Install SDS system 2. Install Wideband 3. Restore Gas Tank 4. Install new gas pump and line 5. Check brakes after two years i'm sure i'll have to address those 6. Install EvoIII Super16g ported and clipped turbo 7. Install the turbo oil pump (machine shop put an N/A one in there. Thanks again Dad for catching that) 8. Fluid check then off to the dyno for dyno break in and tune Now for the the big news!!!!! I'm going E85 baby! I have FIC 1650cc BlueMAX injectors, Bosch 044 pump, and 8an SS fuel line from the tank up. I have two local stations and one on the way to work that I can utilize. This is also the reason i'm working on finding a new Poly tank. Since that's going to take a while i'm just going to have to have a shop restore my old one for the time being. Judging from the build that I currently have and if I tune it in perfect i'm hoping for high high 300's and if i'm lucky low to mid 400's. I know that turbo will be my biggest set-back but i've seen that turbo do 9.5 in the 1/4 on some DSM. I know this car isn't a DSM but I should still be able to rock some nice times. I'll keep you all in the loop including pictures along the way. I just can't wait to dig into it this Sunday! tsiconquest88
actually our cars is a dsm just as much so than the so called dsm's themselves. Heck, if not more, since we are their predecers as well as any other pre 90 mitsu car lol. it means diamond star motors, which is simply the mitsu logo and guess what, we are mitsu and have the diamond star right on our header panel lol. Well starions anyway lol. Edited July 17, 2009 by tsiconquest88
RWDAddict
Yes you have a partial technicality there but the problem lies in our motors as they were developed soley by Mitsubishi where the 4g63 was a joint venture on behalf of both Mitsubishi and Chrystler. RWDAddict
Man this thing is in pieces and I'm going to have trouble considering i haven't worked on one of these cars in years. I need a car for reference just to get it to the point to run the SDS. Anybody in the Chicagoland area that can come over next Sunday and bring your starion along for a frame of reference to many of these just basic parts. None of my friends are familiar with these cars. I trust their skills but don't want to forget something stupid so the more eyes on the car along with a reference car will push this project along niceley. Anybody willing to come out there will be a cooler of beer and food possibly a couple of meals depending on how long we build for. Heck with the right help we might be able to get it idling on Sunday. I think the most difficult part to getting that done is going to be to get the fuel tank restored. It's been sitting for two years and it has to be ready to run E85. Other than that everything is new. Like I said above just need to know where to put it. Also that 101 propose exhaust mani I have didn't fit the evoIII 16g so I'm on the hunt for a turbo. I would like dual ball bearing. I'm not looking for some ebay 50 trim, i'm willing to throw down $1g plus. I'm looking to run 20-25 psi. Maybe a FP Mitsu Blue or Red. I don't know if those are dual ball bearing suggestions would be appreciated. Edited July 20, 2009 by RWDAddict
