SFBMX88
If anyone has tips on doing this, please reply. Also, if I left anything out....you know...Im just going to put up mostly pictures of my swap.... In the begining......(actually, the first day I got it, May 26, 2008) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09815.jpg -Parts needed from the widebody: -Front(THE FOLLOWING PARTS DIFFER FROM WIDEBODY TO FLATBODY) - control arms, strut rods, steering arms, lower ball joints(was easier to just swap over, dont think there is a difference though), outer tie-rod ends, strut assemblies+inserts, hubs/bearings/brakes(calipers are the same)/caliper bracket, wheels(duh) -Rear - hubs(I read you can use just the hubs, but it was easier for me to swap over the whole hub/bearing assembly.), brakes(calipers are the same)/caliper bracket, wheels (I also swapped in the LSD+6 bolt axles) ****DONT FORGET TO CHANGE OUT THE 4 LUG SPARE WHEEL!!!! Differences: sorry, didnt snap a pic of the strut rods, THEY ARE DIFFERENT! sway bars the same, but I had some STs ready to go in... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09938.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09950.jpg control arms(observe the ball joint and sway bar holes, left-flatty, right-widebody) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09927.jpg outer tie-rod ends(length, widebody is longer) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09930.jpg steering arm(widebody in the foreground, slopes down/flatty in the background is almost straight) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09929.jpg axles(they should be the same, but I felt this car needs some LSD and 6 bolt lovin!) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09957.jpg *front struts(strut housing to spindle angles are wider on widebodies(sorry, no pic) front brakes(bigger rotors , hub designs completely different) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09923.jpg rear brakes(bigger rotors) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09952.jpg idler arms are different, but you dont need to change them widebody: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09932.jpg flatty: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09933.jpg Currently: Running SHP wheels(that need to be redone) front and rear(wrong size tires in the back though, too big) Need to cut/roll the fenders because they DO SCRAPE! Also needs an alignment...maybe a corner balance too.... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09453.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09467.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09455.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09458.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09456.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09457.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09469.jpg Anyone else? SFBMX88
Saw this rolling down the street last year. It motivated me more to do this. Looks like he only swapped the front hubs and brakes though(front wheels tucked into the body more). http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC07458.jpg
IntercooledFlatty
man your flatty is sweet. rear 8 http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s263/aiche_photos/855%20Flatty/iojoij006.jpg ...but i cheated cause my flatty came with 5 lugs :sunglasses: i have a set of front shp's for the rear and front 7's for the front i'm currently polishing Edited June 26, 2008 by IntercooledFlatty
Technology
Awesome! But could you have just put the 5 lug hub on the front spindles and the rear spindles in the flatty carriers?
Komeuppance
Ha, all that brake dust on there confused me... I thought you had some 85.5 5 lug style on there, then I switched to a different computer I could see the difference. -Robert Edited June 26, 2008 by Komeuppance
shift1313
robert are you sure? when i first looked at them they looked odd but i think its just the pattern the back of the rim left and the angle. edit: im slow too Edited June 26, 2008 by shift1313
zactek
One thing to add, I used to have 245/50 in the rear, and they rubbed......I cut the lip and went to 245/45, and they were fine.....until I lowered the car, then they rubbed............Right now, I'm using 225/45 on the rear and everything's fine........ I'd like to move out my fronts a little so they can line up with the fender better........BUT I'm torn between getting wheel spacers and longer studs, OR getting front 8in rims.. :confused0024: http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/7845/rebuildpics081od1.jpg http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/9339/rebuildpics080ac6.jpg Zack
SFBMX88
Just a side note here. The lower diff assembly is LSD, the upper is an open diff. Their overall length seems to be the same, but the LSD assembly has a shorter torque tube/longer diff housing, where its the opposite with the open diff. Its my understanding that non-abs cars had open differentials. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09949.jpg
SFBMX88
Awesome! But could you have just put the 5 lug hub on the front spindles and the rear spindles in the flatty carriers? You could. But I think it will come out looking like this: Large gap from front wheel to fender...rear makes no difference... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC07458.jpg Where as this is near flush, AND RUBS!!! http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09469.jpg Edited June 26, 2008 by SFBMX88
Casey_L
This is a really nice thread for flatty guys. I think I might want to pick up a Flatty next. I think this should be a sticky.
SFBMX88
Forgot to mention, RIP to my 88 donor car. It was the very first car I bought, and provided me three years of semi-reliable service. By the end, it was merely a basket case project that I didnt have much time or money for due to financial responsiblity(opening a new business last year). You will be missed! Going off topic here, but... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/Estarion4.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/water.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/hayDRIFT3.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/MVC-057S.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/MVC-063S.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/PICT0072.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/PICT0064.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/PICT0079.jpg ANYBODY WANT A 4-LUG WIDEBODY CHASSIS? http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/sfbmx88vol2/ultraspeed/DSC09422.jpg Edited June 29, 2008 by SFBMX88

shift1313
does the back sit higher than the front? That tire looks better but for some reason you still seem to have a lot of space above the tire.
AndyW
Mine was a complete rear subframe assembly from an 86 TSi swapped onto my 87 LE. the fronts I swapped the hubs and caliper brackets. 7" wheels front and rear. This sits on ST springs. Coke
After being able to finally drive my flatty for the first time, I discovered that it needs both rear differential mounts...BANG BANG. Hah, It's also a non-LSD car. I've got an 87 TSi rear subframe sitting here collecting dust. Will this subframe bolt right up? I see AndyW did it.... My real question is, I am not a real big fan of TSi wheels on a flatty. So, once the TSi subframe is installed...how much of a job is it, to swap the 4 lug hubs into the TSi subframe? D_Venable
should be able to just swap the flatty's hub carriers over (easier than swapping the hub, since it requires 300+ lb-ft torque to undo), since they're both the 4 bolt half shafts, not sure if the spines into the diff are different (shouldn't be)
zactek
should be able to just swap the flatty's hub carriers over (easier than swapping the hub, since it requires 300+ lb-ft torque to undo), since they're both the 4 bolt half shafts, not sure if the spines into the diff are different (shouldn't be) The 4-bolt half-shafts are thinnner and have less splines on them than the 6 bolt ones. I've swapped the outer and inner rear hub parts along with the diff. and half-shafts and it WAS fun to break open, but nothing a 6ft breaker bar pipe can't fix Zack K. D_Venable
yeah, I know the 4 bolt and 6 bolt are different, but he's got an 87 wide rear (still 4-bolt)
zactek
yeah, I know the 4 bolt and 6 bolt are different, but he's got an 87 wide rear (still 4-bolt) Oh, I see. I wonder if there's a 3rd kind of half-shaft that has a thicker axle but a 4-bolt pattern... Zack K.
starquestG54B
im getting a 83 and im really wanting to do this but im not sure if i can simply unbolt the rear struts and 4 bolts holding the entire assembly (rear lsd, brakes , subframe and all) and simply install a entire 88 starion rear assembly in to the 83. could i do this without modding anything? or am i opening a can of worms? need help for this winter project any info would be great
