Zone
I bought a 85.5 that i have since cleaned up. The wiring to the right door switch as well as the wiring to the dome light were all chewed up from a rat or a mouse.I fixed the door switch and the wiring to the dome, now i have to figure out why only my left side speakers are working and not my right. The speaker under the dash was dead, however hooking it up to a working speaker does little to nothing, i can hear what im playing but its super super quite.. lucky i have good hearing. Im narrowing it down to the radio or the wiring, unless 1 dead speaker in the system causes the whole side not to function. Any ideas ?
MikeMeyerhoff
sounds like a speaker wire is grounded or shorted to another wire.
ucw458
Losing a speaker wont cause the rest to not work. But unless you got bad wiring it sounds like your deck isn't working. I've had a few car radios go out like that. Usually the left or right channel quits. Unless you're into electronics and feel like diagnosing the bad components just replace it. Oddly I have an 85.5 stock radio from a parts car. I'm never gonna use it. If you need it let me know.
Zone
Its a 86 radio, Which ones go out normally ?
ucw458
idk which ones go out most. I have a stock eclipse radio in mine. But in my old truck I used the radio alot because of how much I drove. I had 2 head units and 1 cd changer short out one side. But those were aftermarket radios. I'm sure it can happen to stock radios too.

ucw458
87-89 The older cars have a different plug on the back of the radio. Probably could be rewired with a plug off a newer car.

Zone
Turns out the radio had a bad tape deck, the left channel only worked.I tested another 86 radio which worked, but it kept changing the direction of the tape every second. Ended up putting my old aftermarket in, works great, however... if i put the bass up on high i draw a lot of power, the LCD on the radio really flickers, especially if i have the hazards on.I think i still have a electrical problem somewhere, i had a rat in my car that chewed through both door switches + the wiring to the dome light and who knows what else.
