If you want it to run well, don't "F" with the factory carburetor. It has a pretty well designed exhaust manifold so a header is not absolutely necessary but may help a little. You'll get a pretty good gain by going with a weber conversion but the Montero you're getting runs very well as is. Pat the gas twice and she'll fire right up every time. Personally having owned this one, if I weren't going turbo, I wouldn't mess with it. Even if you hop the engine up, it's still gonna be slow.

I have run TBI N/A, MPI N/A and both turbo. as well as some hiticitch carb crap that came with it from some other hack job instaling it. The MPI N/A ran by far the best of the N/A setups. I run 4 diff turbos on them. A smaller turbo is what I would put on it if you did go that way. As for N/A power clean up the heads and port match all the manifolds will help. Mill the head a bit.

Here is a link to a dyno with header and cam. + Weber. Was done on a 4 wheel dyno.http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/12127/NA_Montero_dyno_2_6_with_after_market_cam.jpg

  • 3 weeks later...

Built myself a strong, daily driven, normally aspirated, 2.6L Astron engine mid last year.

CR was around 9.5:1

My build thread (on Sigma-Galant.com)

Used motorbike carbs instead of the standard carb choices.

My last dyno..

I've since fixed up the AF ratio's between 2500 and 3500 but haven't re-dyno'd it yet.

It's around 133HP at the wheels.

Cheers.
