How to make your own oil cooler lines

Recommended Posts

Here is what you want...some sweet oil cooler lines!!

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-20153905.jpg

What parts do you need? And where do you get them?

Hose to replace the OEM hard and soft lines.

Fittings to connect the hose to the oil cooler and the oil filter header.

Adaptors to let the fittings on your hose work with the banjo fittings on the oil cooler and to connect to the metric fitting on the oil filter header.

Tools.

First i will go over the hose i used...

For this build i chose Fragola premium black nylon race hose. Part number FRAHSE84000

What size? -6AN

Why? Its close to stock size. I has some great specs for pressure and heat, and is easy to work with, and it readily available if you ever need to replace a line. It does not have an abrasive outer metal liner to tear up my hard pipes. The outer diameter lets me use Fragola fire sleeve.

How much hose do you need? For my car i used two sections of hose, one 4 foot and one 3 foot. Both sections where trimmed down and i ended up with one section at 38 inch long hose, and then another 9 inches shorter (length acroos oil cooler) at 29 inches.

Looking back i could have went with two 3 foot sections and still been okay. The reason i mention this is the 3 foot sections are what summit racing sells.

Now where to buy this hose? I got mine from Verocious Motorsports

http://www.verocious...old-by-the-Foot

You can also get it from summit on there website or on there ebay store. But Verocious has cooler decals and awesome service so i go with them.

Next lets talk about fittings...

For fittings i used reusable -6 AN fittings from fragola part number FRA2201 (four of them total, two oil cooler lines with two fittings for each line)

These are the recomended fitting for the nylon and steel hose we are using, however any -6AN fitting will work.

Where to buy? I got mine from here...

http://www.verocious...raight-Hose-End

Why? I chose these over crimp fittings becuase its nice to be able to re-use the fittings and trouble shoot leaks or replace a hose with just hand tools. Not that these will leak though. Also these are swivel fittings, so if you ever get to taking your car apart to do new hardpipes or take the timing cover off or any job where pulling the header panel makes it easier like a radiator upgrade or a balance shaft elimination, you can loosen the the -6AN fittting slighty and pivot the oil cooler safely out of the way.

Now adaptors to connect these fittings to your ride...

For the oil cooler you need two M16x1.5 to -6AN banjos

Why? Because the top of the oil filter is very close to the header panel and the hood, so a banjo fitting works here...picture will show...

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-20161840.jpg

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-20154224.jpg

The banjo makes a nice 90 degree off the oil cooler where a staight fitting would have some height and force your oil cooler hose to bend too much

Also the factory uses the same type of fitting here.

Where to get? I got mine from ebay , they are item number 1500-116-152, Straight 16mm to 6AN Banjo Bolt Fitting Kit.Seller: authentic-boosting. Also availble elsewhere, Just look for a M16x1.5 to -6AN banjo. Props to Brian Arnone for selling me a pair of the fragola units.

Another adaptor that is needed is for the oil filter header, where the oil cooler lines attach. You have two options. You can go factory style banjos like already mentioned. Or you can do like i did and use two straight M16x1.5 to -6AN adaptors.

Like so...

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-20163410.jpg

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-20163354.jpg

You can if you choose, screw a banjo in there instead of a straight out fitting.

Where to get the oil filter header adaptors? i used part number FRA46MA

http://www.verocious...etric-Adapter_2

Why? It was cheaper than summit or ebay and aluminum becuase it seemed right threading into my OEM aluminum oil filter header

Now for tools...

For cutting i used a four pound hammer, a mason chisel, and a scrap peice of 1" steel

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-14144406.jpg

Why? Because it creates no metal and abrasive dust like using a dremel or cut off saw does, and becuase it cheap and effective.

For assembly/grasping i used a cheap vise from Harbor Freight Tools , and a Earls aluminum vise jaws from Speedway Motors, Speedway Part #6173661. you can get these on ebay or from the speedway website. Also they come in a sweet nylon version as well...check ebay seller "autofittings"

For the AN wrench i got this one from SUMMIT...

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-20164650.jpg

Its a fragola part number...Summit Racing Part Number: FRA-900086

Here is the Harbor Freight Tools vise..

Where to get it? Part number FRA8800, 3/8 to 5/8 http://www.verociousmotorsports.com/Shop-by-Category/Sleeving/Fragola-Ultra-Lightweight-Fire-Sleeve

I got 3 feet, Used two 9 inch sections on the oil filter header side, witgh 6 inch leftover for use as hose armor.

See it here...

OK so now you have all this stuff and what to do with it?

Cut your hose...

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-14144406.jpgYou need one section of 38" and one section or 29" (or whatever length you want, these are the lenghts i chose with my setup. Anything about 25 inch will barely reach the oil cooler FYI)

Slide you heat sheild over the hose....

Assemble the fiitings on each end...x4

here is what you are shooting for

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-20153927.jpg

To do this insert the hose into the end like this...

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-14144604.jpg

It will look like this if you do it right...

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-14144923.jpg

You the hose fully inserted into the nut, some peeps will say leave it 1mm out from bottom, but ignore that for this set of fittings and hose...

With your hose inserted in the end like in the picture you can now hand thread it onto the -6 fitting...the idea is to not let the hose push out ot the fitting...so you can use a scotch tape depth guide...

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_2012-11-14145624.jpg

Or instead of putting the end in the vise and pushing and turning the hose, a better option is put the hose and socket in the vise, and turn the tapered end into the the hose..as seen here...

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/oil%20cooler%20lines/th_SAM_1795.jpg

lube the fitting...

Install adaptors on your car...

Very cool write up complete with part #'s, thank you sir!

Do you think 3' of hose will reach the passenger side airdam duct? That's where mine is going as soon as I get my ish together and drop in my V mount intercooler.

Yes it would just reach. Better off to use a banjo off the oil cooler header with that sorta setup, would let the line shoot straight over to that corner. Your talking just under the aircan where the evap can was, right?

great writeup!

whats next? turbo oil line? :)

Yes, turbo oil supply line.
