JohnnyWadd
Done this four times now and only cracked one Step 1 carefully feed the wire through the sealer and try to get under the glass. You don't want to dig into the glass. http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-21131242.jpg Feed a 1/4 inch or smaller at a time so it doesn't fold up and kink the wire...now you have this... http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-21131326.jpg Use a sawing action (having an assistant helps) being careful not to get too close the glass like so... http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-21131629.jpg I used vise grips. A wooden handle is better because when a vise grips falls out of your hand things break http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-21125447.jpg Use some lube it helps a lot for cutting and lets that wire slide smooth if it contact the windshield which it will http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-21132015.jpg 45 MINUTES and here it is. Today was 9 degrees this morning and very cold but I was still able to get it out (a warm day is recommended and far easier) http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-21132952.jpg New home safe and sound. http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-21133121.jpg Be carefull with the top and bottom lip and pinch weld area. This is where you want to loop your wire and pull from the inside along the plane of the windshield... These corners will try to catch your wire...http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-22163054.jpghttp://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-22163042.jpghttp://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-22162938.jpg Here I got going to hard and cut into the metal http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-22162956.jpg Here is the bottom seal surface. Its pretty wide. If you puncture it twice and then get in the car and grab the two ends and pulled up along the plane of the windshield it works best.http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/starionkiller/1987%20conquest%20partout/th_2013-11-22162800.jpg Edited November 23, 2013 by JohnnyWadd
Burton
45 minutes? Slowpoke They make kits for this that are actually quite reasonable... a length of braided wire (the roughness of the wire helps saw thru the sealer), a tool to feed the wire thru the sealer, and wooden handles with tight connections to hold the wires. All for $10-15 shipped. I used to use just standard wire wrapped around 8" sections of a broom handle, but that braided stuff really cuts thru the sealer fast. Good writeup! Ya I know I am slow but better slow and no bloody knuckles. Last one I did was in the summer we had it cut in maybe ten minutes. Add in the coffee break maybe I pulled it in 38 minutes so there LOL Used this. Its the braided stuff like you mentioned and has a coating too seems to be slippery.http://www.toolsourc...dium/115278.jpg Edited November 21, 2013 by JohnnyWadd
Burton
I may get some of that stuff after the wire I have is gone. It cuts good, but will break 2-3 times per windshield.
Shelby
a set of guitar strings goes for like $5 warm day is good but not a 100f day , soft sealer will reseal it's self almost as fast as you loosen it

Its more temperature stable. It has to be. Last one I did was in august in Eugene Oregon it was 90 plus that day. That's why it sliced it so quick too. It doesn't seem to melt back together at all. Its like an inner tune , the rubber is already vulcanized and itjust turns to powder where the saw rope cuts it. Like sawdust but rubber dust LOL. I may get some of that stuff after the wire I have is gone. It cuts good, but will break 2-3 times per windshield. Yes it definitely does break. Especially on doing a starquest because you are forcing it to grind metal when you pull at an angle away from the glass. vbrad511
I've used guitar strings plenty of times, but only after I've cut as much of the seal as possible with a snap off knife. I've cracked a few with just the strings. Does the actual windshield wire cut better/faster/easier than a guitar string does?
questsale
Does the dashboard have to be removed at all? How much more work if its still in place?

I've cracked a few with just the strings. Does the actual windshield wire cut better/faster/easier than a guitar string does? I think this stuff is a little better because its weaker and has a coating. I have seen where its gets to digging in the windshield and I know guitar string is more aggressive. Does the dashboard have to be removed at all? How much more work if its still in place? Good question. I Think you are just looking at more work with the dash in. The steel lip makes you go at a weird angle on the inner side anyway.
questsale
If I take my car to a shop to replace the windshield, what will they do? Obviously they are not gonna remove the dash.
JohnnyWadd
If I take my car to a shop to replace the windshield, what will they do? Obviously they are not gonna remove the dash. They have a special knife that is powered by air pressure it oscillates super fast and cuts the seal. And if they are removing an old windshield they don't car about if it might break it. Questsale, look at some youtube videos and checkout the angles. This is why pulling the dash is not a big deal, on the inside of the car. To clear the lip and pinch weld you are pulling the saw wire a certain way.
