JessN16
I'm converting my 87 over to an 88 igniter. So I get someone to send me the pigtail connector off an 88 wiring harness, and of course I get the connector and all the wires are wrapped together in old black electrical tape. I decide to untape this so I can trace wires back to the plug and consult the pics in the FAQ list to see what I'm connecting to what. In addition to the pigtail connector itself, sticking out of the old tape is a ring connector with two black wires with red stripes. These wires are identical to the wires that are grounded to the igniter chassis screw in the 87. But as I unwrap the new pigtail, those wires simply FALL OUT. They were not connected to anything. Their two ends were simply cut off and they were apparently stuck inside the harness. Then, more curiousness. There is a black wire and a white wire coming out of the pigtail connector that then are grouped together under a dark gray sheath with a white stripe down it. Separately, there is another white wire coming off the pigtail connector that goes in a dark gray sheath with a white stripe down it. At the top of those two sheaths is some kind of uncovered silver wire. It looks like the shielding wire from inside a cable TV coaxial cable. The two pieces of unshielded wire are then inserted into something that is plastic, see-through and the color of amber candy. Down inside this see-through sheath, they are apparently tied together, and coming out of this thing is a black wire with a yellow stripe and red rings around it. So here are the questions: 1) Do I need to reconnect the ring connector to something and if so, what?2) What do I do about those shielded wires? Just retape them, or what?3) Can anyone give me a really quick wire-to-wire matchup cheat sheet between an 88 igniter pigtail and the wiring harness from an 87? Here are pics of what I've got: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ConStar8788/Wires1.jpghttp://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ConStar8788/Wires2.jpg

Shelby
the eyelet in your pic is a ground connector,, but question it looks like one of the ground wires is cut into,, is it ,if so solder it back togather,, several of the wires to the ingiter are shield'd wires often these shields are tie'd to one another and most but not all lead back to the ecu area for a ground , single eye let wire under one of the ecu mounting screws
JessN16
spoolinturbo, I've read that thread a bunch of times. I can't find any reference in it to the black wire I have with a yellow stripe and miniature red rings. Furthermore, that thread loses me. Are the wires coming off my 87 igniter the same colors as the wires on an 88 igniter, and I'm just to match up color-to-color? Shelby, The eyelet does have two wires coming from it, and both have been cut. The question is, what do I hook them back into? By my count, two of the wires (the wastegate wires) will not be used. The only other "extra" wires is this black wire with a yellow stripe and miniature red rings that is hooked into that rubber thing where the shielded wires connect to. Is this wire supposed to connect to both the ground wires? Jess
Couth'nize
That shiny shield wire is a chassis ground wire. The oxygen sensor wire and the tach wire to the ECU are both like that. The wire consist of an inner core and an outer shield wrap wire. One end of the shiny shield wire goes to the intake ground and the other end is grounded at the ECU case screw. Shelby
ok i open'd the harness on the 86 igniter plug,,one of those blk/red strip wires go to the two wires that are cut off from the shield wrapings , seems strange that there is no eyelet on the wires and odd that both yours and mine have the same two wires that are cut off,, but someone could have stolen ,the eyelet at some time or other ,the wire with an eyelet is the coil neg signal wire blue/white , it is connect'd to the white in car tach feed wire heres some pics of the 86 and 89 connector,, take note that the wire colors on the harness side and the igniter side do not match on the 89 igniter ,,that means you can not go by wire color comeing out of the 89 igniter to wire the plug up ,,you must go by wire location in the plug http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10009/86_igniter_plug_connector_002a.jpghttp://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10009/86_igniter_plug_connector_015a.jpg

At the top of those two sheaths is some kind of uncovered silver wire. It looks like the shielding wire from inside a cable TV coaxial cable. Ok, you got a cut off end from an 88 harness, in that area there is much extra wire and in the other harness they cut from, those what seem to be "extra" wires are just the other one or two depending on how it was folded over, are just the same wire or wires that cross back and forth to take up all the slack and you didn't even need to pay no attention to them. They are in your 87 harness too if you start to unwrap it. Black wire with yellow stripe is power its the ignition wire, starter circuit. Black with red rings is ground and while there are they they were twisted to the end of a braided shield to there was something to put a ring terminal on the end of for a ground that looked pretty not a bare wire that would corrode and run back up the wire and slowly ruin it. The two pieces of unshielded wire are then inserted into something that is plastic, see-through and the color of amber candy. Down inside this see-through sheath, they are apparently tied together, and coming out of this thing is a black wire with a yellow stripe and red rings around it. Mitsubishi has strange ways of wrapping up splices or others did, this is all through out the harness.1) Do I need to reconnect the ring connector to something and if so, what?2) What do I do about those shielded wires? Just retape them, or what?3) Can anyone give me a really quick wire-to-wire matchup cheat sheet between an 88 igniter pigtail and the wiring harness from an 87?The 88 and 87 has the same color wires in the same places but some extras and while there are the same color, they have a different purpose and go to some place else so you have to check the connector on the other end where they go to see if you got the right wire in the right place. dashed lines on each side of the wire means a braided shield 1987http://www.b2600turbo.com/images/87eci2.jpg http://www.b2600turbo.com/images/87eci3.jpg 1988 http://www.b2600turbo.com/images/88eci.jpg
JessN16
Indiana, I sent you a PM. Thanks for everyone's advice and pics, but I'm pretty much more confused than I was before. Some seem to be saying the colors will match on an 87 vs. an 88, while some seem to be saying they won't. I can't figure out if I need to reconnect those two black/red wires that have the ringlet on one end, and if I am to reconnect them, where I connect them to. I feel just confused enough right now to set the car on fire. Jess
notfried
dude, I don't see how you're confused. The two wires that I showed you go to nothing. The black/red ground should already be on your CAR'S harness and already grounded. All the colors match for wiring the '88/'89 plug to the '87 except two and they're on the same side of the plug. Couth'nize
Besides the BLACK(2) and WHITE(2) wires, the rest should match. Now you got to be careful and make sure you do not mix the WHITE wires as one goes to the DISTRIBUTOR and one goes to the KNOCK sensor. Same as the BLACK, one goes to the DISTRIBUTOR and one goes to the shield wire. I hate to tell you to ignore the ring color as they represent something, I just go by the solid colors. You will have to study the wiring schematic carefully. I think your mystery wire (BLK/RED with yellow ring) goes to an inhibitor switch if you got an automatic car....goes to ground for 5speed. Others can correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just going by the electrical schematic I have here at home.
Shelby
when i said do not go by wire color i was talking about out of the 89 igniter to the igniter plug,, as with most all mits sesnors the wires from the sensors tot he harness connector may not match the oem harness side wire colors,, so go by location in the connection not color ,,the connector on the 87 is the same as the connector on the 89 PLUS 2 extra wires ,,for get the 2 extra wires
