Engine Bay cleaning

I would like some tips how to clean the engine bay with out messing up nothing. People have said its a easy job to do, I never done it. I really need help on. I know cover the alternator the knock box and battery, as well the fuse link box. I like people let me know there thoughtful ideas.

So to give a little background I bought my car with a spun bearing and as a live and learn mistaken I rebuilt the engine using the original oil pump which after 600 miles spun another bearing on a freshly machined crank. Two days ago I finished the second rebuild using a great condition standard crankshaft and a second oil pump that I checked out and found to be in otherwise new condition including the relief. I blew out all of the accessible oil passages in the block with compressed air and

I am having a brain fart unfortunately. Where does the line go that connects to the nipple in the photo? The bottom runs to the oil pan and the other obviously goes to the valve cover. http://i49.tinypic.com/64nrq8.jpg
