Mix_67
So the school auto club and the local SCCA put on a Auto-x Novice day today, and I got to run the Flatty. It was a blast and I learnt a lot about the car. First off my struts are gone, secondly the line between push and oversteer is very very thin. Tomorrow is another event and a day with timing records so I am pumped to go again. Special thanks to Andy for a few pointers and holding tight on the bumpy ride. http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp171/mix_67/PSB%20Auto-x/Auto-x_Novice_Day053.jpg Few more of my friends cars: http://s409.photobucket.com/albums/pp171/m...7/PSB%20Auto-x/ Edited May 9, 2009 by Mix_67
BrazilBoy
Kill any cones? I murdered a whole bunch my first time....
Mix_67
I defiantly killed some cones. There was no timing and no penalties today so I felt free to run at the edge of control.
dmyers151
That's awesome man. Car looks great. EDIT: That black 1g DSM is almost tripod in one of those pics, haha. Edited April 18, 2009 by dmyers151
Mix_67
You don't have to lie and say the car looks good. The drivers door is a different color and the matco paint job is falling off. But hey it was fun to drive.
Mix_67
Sunday was the official race, and again it was a blast. Overall I came in 9h out of 14 in street mod, However I was the slowest out of the group of friends I was there with. The 4 of us where within half a second on a 40 second course. LS1 GTO, FWD Turbo Talon, AWD Talon, 87 Flatty. This morning I noticed the outside of my right knee is black and blue from bracing myself, so it looks like i will be in the market for a harness. Also the struts are gone and I was driving in the fender well half the time. http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp171/mix_67/th_Auto-xBehrend065.jpg http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp171/mix_67/PSB%20Auto-x/Auto-xBehrend058.jpg http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp171/mix_67/PSB%20Auto-x/Auto-xBehrend060.jpg Edited April 27, 2009 by Mix_67
eviper21
daym look at that body roll in the last pic...lol...looks like loads of fun mayn cant wait to go do that.
InvolvedRotary
Autocross is addicting, and grats on takig the first step in greatly understanding your cars limits. Ive auto-x'd a few times myself, a handful of times in my rx-7 (FC nonturbo) and I got to auto-x my 87 Conquest TSi back in march. Learned that old rear tires+lsd+boost=fun times. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b287/RX-7-88/87%20Conquest%20TSi/359079230.jpg ^rounding a sweeping right into a much tighter right before a short slalom http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b287/RX-7-88/87%20Conquest%20TSi/autox593.jpg ^going thru a "chicago box" that was after the short slalom, the box was the last corner before the finish timing lights. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b287/RX-7-88/87%20Conquest%20TSi/autox465.jpg ^exiting the "chicago box" with the foot clearly on the throttle http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b287/RX-7-88/87%20Conquest%20TSi/autox466.jpg ^having gotten too sideways I overcorrected and ended up facing the somewhat right direction...still sideways. Front tires were brand new, rears have maybe 2~3 mm of treadlife left, road surface was a very uniform asphault that the local TN highway patrol and other local officers use for vehicular training. I came in 3rd in the G Stock class (of 5 cars, winner in my class was an 05 mini cooper S) and came in 61st out of 77 entrants. I thought it was pretty good considering I had never ran the 'Quest that hard till that day. Though to be fair I ran 54th out of 65 in my mazda at the same location last november, ran 5th of 6 cars in CSP (C class Street Prepared, 4 of the 6 cars were 99 miata's on new R compound tires, I only beat out another nonturbo rx7 who was on street tires but running some form of suspension upgrade). Keep it up and have fun.

DieHARDmitsu.
Looks fun!!!!!!!!! Body roll seems to be a major obsticle on StarQuests, wish there was a cheap/easy way to over come it.
Mix_67
http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp171/mix_67/IMG_1324.jpg Yeah the body roll is pretty bad. I am working on taking care of it. Hopefully struts and swaybars help
jahjah
I need to learn to stop breaking stuff at the time the AutoXs are here
InvolvedRotary
Yeah, compared to alot of the other cars there, the ones that had the least 'roll' were the ones running stiff spring/shock/strut combinations or coilovers. Alot of the mini's, and even an AWD eclipse were 3 wheelin during hard cornering. Even my rx7 has alot of body roll, and ive pulled about 100~200 lbs of useless crap out of it, but all its suspension components need replaced/upgraded, same with the 'Quest (though just some coilovers would do it good)
mstieg
everyone's right about the springs & shocks, but how much more does poly suspension bushings help beyond that? I've got em in there and it really seems to handle like a completely different car. Turns tight as hell and stops on a dime with barely ANY nose dive. Haven't ever done AutoX, but plan on giving it a go when all else is ready. Just curious what to expect now because before adding the Tokico Blues, coilovers, and full susp. bushings, it sure did roll a lot and squatted pulling 2nd & 3rd bad. So much better now. Looking forward to it even more after reading your experiences. Edited April 25, 2009 by mstieg
InvolvedRotary
The 'squating' should be minimized with the a stiffer suspension, same with body roll. Don't be afraid to hit up a local autocross with the car in its current state, they will generally allow ANYTHING to run as long as it is 'street' legal, or passes a tech inspection where they just check to make sure everything's strapped down and the seatbelts work. Most fun you'll have in your car without shelling out for a real track day.
Sully
you guys need to find some better lots. Or atleast better courses. This is what we run My ride for nationals. Missing from the pic are 18x10.5 FR500 w/ Hoosier A6 315/30/18. http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs037.snc1/3298_1059353890400_1422486110_30193162_8124982_n.jpg http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs037.snc1/3298_1059353850399_1422486110_30193161_2955160_n.jpg not my car, I just buy tires. And I got a Suspension sponsorship for us too. We're running full Pedder's Suspension prototype suspension for the Mustang. We're basically the guinea pigs http://www.peddersusa.com/products/23/156 Edited April 25, 2009 by Sully
InvolvedRotary
Yeah, its hard to get places here in east TN to let the local SCCA crew use parking lots, that and its RARE to find a 'large' lot that is in good condition and has ver fiew light posts. The course you posted looked very friendly to high output cars (like vettes/sti's/evo's and the like), the only place we've got that could be as nice and large as that course was is out in bristol (yes the speedway) and use the parking lot there. Not a bad deal to be sponsored to be the guinea pig, wish I had something similar at least for tires.
Sully
lol... that event was hosted by the Corvette Club of MI. The Conquest used to do well on their courses The Alfa Romeo club has more Mini, Miata friendly courses Edited April 25, 2009 by Sully

Mix_67
Next weekend we will be having an event at the Erie speedway which is a 3/8mile banked oval with a paved infield. I am excited to tackle that course. Get to get out of 1st gear.
AndyW
HEHEH, yah We will see how the auto yellow car will fair there. I'm just going to bolt on the sticky tires and see how I can do in G-Stock. Or Lake Erie Speedway runs are pretty bad Sully. Incorporating the banking itno the coarse is way fun, the transition coming on and off the apron at high speeds is pretty hairraising at times. I got the Tokicos installed on the front of the green car this weekend and started on the SS lines and slotted rotors. I found out I dodged this layoff today so I'm ordering my Porterfield pads asap. whoo hoo! All vaccuum lines are ran, new intercooler piping is installed, washer bottle mounted, waiting on bung for the wideband and the exhaust will be bolted up then. Basicaly within the next week or so I'm going to start wiring. Basicaly I want to try and make it to the Solo National event at the Army Depot in NY in June, We'll see. I didn't see any national events in NY. We're running the Toledo Prosolo and the National at Grissom AFB in Indiana then on to Lincoln, Nebraska. Sucks they're not running the Wisconsin event this year.

Mix_67
Got another day in of auto-x. My personal results weren't the greatest, but i had a ball, I was topping out 2nd gear on the straights, and if I had the guts I could have really been hammer down on the banked turns. AndyW ran about 3 seconds quicker than me on a 56 second course. That was in his stock yellow widebody, auto, w/ r-comps. I think my cheap tires are starting to catch up with me. Oh well the only way to speed up is seat time. Hopefully I will come across some pictures from the event. If I do I will share.
