Pitman Arm Seal Leak

My 87 is leaking at the pitman arm seal on the bottom of the steering box. I was wondering if that seal is replaceable and if it is what do I need to do it, the steering is fine other than leaking fluid.

Thanks in advance.

prof quest has a great illustrated write up on the other starquest website.

it does take some special tools and it gets pretty involved.

there is more than just a single exterior seal causing your problem.

the entire shaft with gearing must be removed to access all the replacable parts.

he will send you a rebuild unit for $275. thats the route I took. I think that

parts alone run over $100.

there is a link to the post on this site too so you'll have to search.

I'd look for someone parting their car out and have them ship one to you, then make sure that one has new seals, and just swap it in. I made the HUGE mistake of having a dealership fix my leaky pitman arm once. never do that. Always do the work yourself.

I might add that it is a real PITA to get that pitman arm off the steering box. I shattered 2 pullers getting mine off.

Had to bust out the acetylene torch and heat the snot out of it and rail it with big hammer... repeatedly

:iagree: Like PSU Crash says.. It can be a major PITA, I also broke two before I got the one off the 89.. But I got it off and replaced the seal... and it is and remains leak free. Advance Auto has the seal..
