Mass Air Mods

Recommended Posts

OK every one tell me what you think of this mod

http://63.251.78.219/honey_comb_removal.htm

I know the Honey Comb removal is not new, but I did that and used a knife and removed the ridge and made if smooth (trying to make it like a Ram tube or what every you want to call them). But any ways it did not seam to mess any with the idle (this was done with the air box front opened and a K&N filter).

It did not seam to run any diff. I would think that this could give it a little better flowing.

What do you guys think of this mod?

I am not a fan of removing the honeycomb. I tried that and my car would idle around 500rpms and just didn't like it.

IMO The 1G MAS  is the best resource short of a VPC or a highly modded MAS with a SAFC on the stock ECU.

I also removed the honey cone in the MAS about 2 years ago to see what happened. Of course It idled fine till I drove the car the once of of boost it would stall or run like crap. So I installed the honey comb back and got a smooth running engine back.

That Honeycomb is there to set up a nice smooth laminar airflow so that the little swirls of air, that are created by that little wedge in the throat of the sensor, are the only turbulence between the ultrasonic transducers(speaker/mic). The sensor counts the swirls. If there is a lot of other turbulence in the sensor, because the honeycomb has been removed, the sensor can't count the swirls, 'cuz the swirls are lost in the turbulence. Counting the swirls is how the ECU decides when to fire the injectors. The flow you might gain by removing the honeycomb will almost certainly cost you smooth closed loop fuel metering.

My advice is if you want more flow get a bigger turbo or a boost controller, there are lot's of mods that are more worthwhile than the honeycomb removal.

I contribute the less turbulence to how the ridge has been cut away and smoothened out, I tried to make it like a Velocity tower (or ram tube whatever you want to call it). I am not saying any others to do this, but it worked for us with no messing up in idle or anything. Maybe it has to do with some other mod we have done to it, like the ram air ducts. Also it may be note worthy that it I made the wedge sharper on the front (not to a point). We are changing the air box system and we will see if it will works good after that. And in my book any mod that is free gives power and has no side effects or very little is worth the time. I would like to put this mass air in a few diff cars with diff air boox set ups and see if it messes up on their cars before i will tell any one to do this. But you do have to be open to new ideas.

Update

Installed the modded mass air in to the car with the same system for air filter and mass air mounting as before (airbox with filter and a hoes going over the mass air from the air box). It ran just like all of you exspected idled roughf small studder under boost. I blame it on how the air box is conected to the mass air.

Then We drive the the local Ace and pick up a 6 in to 4 in air duct reducer, slap the reducer over the mass air conect a 4 in hoes from the air box to the reducer. Fits great hoes only needs to be about 1/2 in long slap the stock turbo boot on the mass air and air box lid and slap some duct tape on for good messure ;D We go for a test drive with the modded mass air and no idle messed up runs fine no studer under boost runs like it should. (while we were at it we converted to mechanical lifters)

Ok here is a bunch of pics of it (i know it should have something to protect it from the weather so no water gets in the filter and so on). Hope you can see it in these pics didnt come out as nice as i would have liked. Also the pics should load much faster then before :)

Used a Mustang Air box and K&N

While we're on the subject of air flow; has anybody tried an aftermarket MAS?  I'm looking into buying one (actually, it's somehow cheaper than buying a stock one from the factory) from Midwest Turbo.  I believe it's called a Venom or something like that.

I posted this somewhere else but I'm bored, studying for finals. :D  TechnoSquare is supposed to have a calibrated one on the market by the end of January.  I'm trying to get pricing info and will post that as soon as I get it.  The unit is supposed to be 75mm!!

Would a HKS VPC work without having to buy a 1G MAS cause to my knowledge the i thought the VPC replaced the MAS or do they have to work together, have had this question for a while and curous now cause it coming up to where i am probably goin to upgrade to The 1g mas and get a bigger turbo

Thanks for the help

Guest c89zx7r

i have a design of my own , at the moment . But i have to wait to get my conquest this weekend or next week so i can try it out . One is already made .

You know how all the honda rice people put the cold air intake pipe on there car . which all it is , is a metal pipe withe a filter on it . well thats what mines is but with the mass air sensor installed into it . i took the electrical parts out the mass air housing and installed them into the metal pipe . now its just one solid pipe going from the turbo to the filter with a mass air sensor built in the middle of it . can't wait to get my quest . if i have any idle problems will just have to go out and buy some honey comb and cut the round shape out and install it into the pipe . sorry guys don't have any pics yet .
