Ron R
Hey Guys, my first post here, been so lucky over the past 13 years, but now I have a problem that I need your help. For the past month my 88 Starion, manual tranny-if it matters, was idling high, if I were driving it would also sometimes race up at 3000 rpm at. After a while when I come to a stop It would idle high, the after 10-15 seconds the idle would come back down to about 1100 rpms. Then if I were to start it back up within a half hour, it would be very hard to start, would turn over but would not fire, I would get a major gas smell like it was flooding, I would have to either feather the peddle or push it all the way to the floor to get her to eventually start. This went on for about 2 weeks, then last week I went to start her and it started right up but sounded like 1 0r 2 cylinders were not firing, then after 20 seconds it ran fine. I turned her off then went to start her about 30 minuts later, and it just turns over, no firing and a big time smell of gas. I went to check the plugs, which about 2 months ago were in good shape, now were all black and fouled out looking. I then changed the plugs and wires, she still does not fire. I pulled the new plugs and they were soaked with gas, all of the plugs are getting spark,, I tried starter fluid- no luck. I check the injectors, one seems to be working when I try to start her. I did notice that one of the injectors can be moved around, the other injector is held tightly in the clip. I also noticed that when the key was in the on poistion, I would hear the injector spraying, even tho I was not trying to start her. All vaccum lines seem ok. Ive been reading all the post, but cannot really figure it out. Could it be a bad EGR, could it be bad injector clips, a bad ecu.... I did hear that the fusible link box need to be cleaned...If anyone has any thoughts that would be greatly appreciated, thanks......Ron
marso
Injectors are probably sticking open. Take off the OVC pipe and and put a jumper wire between the pump test connector and battery positive. The pump will run. Look in the throttle body opening. If they are spraying get them cleaned or buy cleaned / new ones. The idle is probably the TPS. Do a reset.

Shelby
yep you got a stuck open inj,, if it's open all the time you can remove the ovc pipe and jumper the pump for a sec and see which one it is,, befor you go to restart the engine,, unplug both injs,, loosen the egr valve and alow the fuel to drain out of the intake,,,it can hold 3/4 " of gas in the bottom of it below the intake port,, and that will wash out any new plugs you install instantly as you crank the engine,, remember to disable the spark by unpluging the dist befor spining engine to clean the gas from the cyls,, or you may end up with a fire like i did not long ago with the rider lawn mower,, the carb leak'd gas intot he engine and with out thinking i remove'd the spark plug and spun it over,, i had fire out the plug hole and out the exh like a blow torch , ground and tire on fire,, this old an had to move way to fast for my likeings

BrokenquestTSI
i tried to crank my engine for well over 20-25 seconds numerous times and shelby told me about the wet plug thing and i took them out and cleaned them with alcohol and then i didnt have to buy new ones. they fired. well, after i took some more advice and fixed the cam/valve timing. lol. i felt kinda dumb. yea shelby you've been a real help. dasgunner came to help me and told me what to do, but he wasnt used to doin it with the engin in the car, so i remembered reading an old post by shelby about 'walking the chain' and i fixed it and it started right up. your the man shelby. huge help and very valuable member on this site in my opinion and im sure alot of others too. thanx again. -Broken - i cant post and its KILLIN me.........
